What does a Bookmaker do?

As a bookmaker you take bets on sporting events, horse racing, and other competitions, calculating odds and paying out winnings to customers. You are responsible for managing the risk on each book, ensuring the shop or pitch remains profitable while delivering a fair service to customers. Day-to-day work involves operating betting terminals, processing cash and digital transactions, displaying up-to-date odds, and balancing the till at the end of each shift. You may work in a high-street betting shop for companies such as Paddy Power, BoyleSports, or Ladbrokes, or on a racecourse pitch as an independent or on-course bookmaker. You deal regularly with a wide range of customers and must handle complaints calmly while following the strict legal and ethical rules that govern gambling in Ireland.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Bookmaker

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 8:15 on a Tuesday morning. You work for a BoyleSports shop on the main street of a midlands town, and your shift starts at 9:00. You arrive a few minutes early, unlock the premises with the keyholder code, and begin the opening routine: switching on the EPOS betting terminals, checking that the satellite feed for live odds is running correctly, and counting the float in the till to confirm it matches last night's closing balance sheet. By 9:30 the first customers are drifting in, mostly older regulars checking the Racing Post for the day's card at Leopardstown. You key their selections into the terminal, print their dockets, and take their cash. Every transaction has to be processed accurately because the system logs each bet against the book for that race.

Required Education

Entry into bookmaking typically requires a Leaving Certificate, and most employers recruit directly and provide on-the-job training, so no third-level qualification is strictly necessary. Subjects such as Mathematics and Business are particularly useful because the role involves odds calculation, cash handling, and end-of-day accounts. Betting shop operators in Ireland must hold a licence issued by the Revenue Commissioners under the Betting Act, and individual staff are expected to follow the rules set out by their licensed employer. Some employees progress by completing QQI Level 5 modules in Retail or Business, which can be taken through a College of Further Education as a PLC course. There is no mandatory professional registration body for bookmaking staff, but employers place a high value on demonstrated numeracy, trustworthiness, and customer service experience. Ongoing training in responsible gambling and anti-money laundering procedures is required by law.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most bookmakers start as betting shop assistants or cashiers, learning the trade on the job before taking on more responsibility for odds management and daily operations. With experience, you can progress to a supervisory or shop-manager role, overseeing staff, managing float, and hitting sales targets for a regional operator. Some experienced bookmakers move into trading or odds-compiling roles within larger companies, working in head-office or digital environments. An ambitious minority set up as independent on-course bookmakers, attending race meetings and applying for their own Revenue licence.

AI Impact on the job

AI-driven algorithms are already used by major betting companies to set and adjust odds in real time, reducing some of the manual odds-compiling work that bookmakers once did by hand. Automated trading systems and machine-learning models help companies manage risk across thousands of simultaneous markets, which changes the skill mix required of staff. However, face-to-face customer interaction, on-course pitching, and day-to-day shop management still require human judgement and interpersonal skills that AI cannot easily replicate. Bookmakers who develop familiarity with digital platforms and data tools will be better placed as the industry continues to evolve.
