What does a Cabin Crew Member do?

As a Cabin Crew Member you are responsible for the safety, comfort, and well-being of passengers on board commercial flights. Your day involves conducting pre-flight safety checks, demonstrating emergency procedures, and ensuring the cabin is prepared for departure. During the flight you serve food and beverages, handle passenger queries and complaints, and respond calmly to any medical or safety incidents that arise. You work closely with fellow crew members, pilots, and ground staff, and your shifts can include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and international layovers.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Cabin Crew Member

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 03:45 on a Tuesday morning. You are based at Dublin Airport and today's roster has you on a 06:10 departure to Faro, Portugal. You leave home by 04:30, drive to the long-stay car park, and take the shuttle to Terminal 2. By 05:00 you are in the crew room, checking the flight briefing on the airline's internal system. The crew briefing covers passenger numbers, any unaccompanied minors on the manifest, the weather forecast for Faro, and the fuel load. At 05:20 you board the aircraft with your colleagues. You walk every row of the cabin, checking that the overhead lockers close properly, the seat belts are functional, and the emergency equipment — life jackets, oxygen masks, and fire extinguishers — is in place and signed off on your pre-flight checklist. Nothing gets skipped.

Required Education

There is no specific Leaving Certificate subject requirement to become a Cabin Crew Member, though English, a modern language, and subjects that build communication skills are beneficial. Most Irish airlines, including Ryanair and Aer Lingus, recruit candidates who are at least 18 years of age and hold a Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification. Successful applicants complete intensive airline-specific training programmes covering aviation safety, first aid, passenger service, and security procedures, which typically lead to a QQI Level 5 award or an equivalent airline-recognised certification. A PLC course in Travel and Tourism at a College of Further Education can strengthen your application and provide relevant background knowledge. Fluency in more than one language is a distinct advantage given the international nature of the role.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Cabin Crew Members begin in a junior crew role following completion of their airline's initial training programme. With experience, you can progress to Senior Cabin Crew Member or Purser, taking on greater responsibility for service standards and junior staff. Further advancement can lead to roles such as Cabin Crew Trainer, Crew Manager, or In-Flight Services Supervisor on the ground. Some experienced crew members move into operations, rostering, or customer experience roles within the airline.

AI Impact on the job

AI is increasingly used in airline operations for rostering, scheduling, and passenger communications, which can streamline some administrative tasks that crew managers previously handled manually. Automated check-in, AI-driven customer service chatbots, and predictive catering systems are changing the nature of pre-flight preparation and in-flight service planning. However, the core safety, emergency response, and interpersonal aspects of the cabin crew role remain firmly human and cannot be automated. AI tools may support crew in accessing real-time passenger information or safety data, but they are unlikely to displace the role itself in the foreseeable future.
