As a Claims Handler you are responsible for managing insurance claims from the moment they are reported through to final settlement. You review and assess claims across areas such as motor, home, and liability insurance, gathering relevant documentation and deciding whether a claim is valid under the terms of the policy. Your day involves communicating with policyholders, solicitors, loss assessors, and repair garages, guiding claimants through what can be a stressful process. You also watch for potentially fraudulent claims, maintain accurate records, and ensure that payments to valid claimants are processed efficiently and fairly.
Listen: a day as a Claims Handler
You arrive at your open-plan office in central Dublin at half eight, grab a coffee, and log into the claims management system your insurer uses to track every active case. Before nine o'clock you scan your inbox: overnight claim notifications have come in through the online portal, and two policyholders have left voicemails about a storm that hit Wexford the previous evening. You flag these as priority and add them to your queue. By mid-morning you are deep into an existing motor claim. A policyholder rear-ended another car on the M50 last week and you need the repairer's estimate, the Garda reference number, and photographs of the damage before you can authorise anything. You ring the approved garage in Tallaght, chase the missing photos, then call the policyholder to explain the next steps. They are anxious and frustrated, so you have to be patient and clear.
A Leaving Certificate is the typical starting point, with subjects such as Mathematics, Business, and Accounting providing a useful foundation for the analytical and financial aspects of the role. Many entrants join insurance companies directly after the Leaving Certificate and study towards professional qualifications while working. The key professional qualification in Ireland is the Accredited Product Adviser (APA) award, offered through the Insurance Institute of Ireland at NFQ Level 6, which is often a contractual requirement within your first year of employment. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC in Business, Finance, or Insurance Studies from a College of Further Education can also provide a strong entry route. Some Claims Handlers go on to complete the Certificate in Insurance Practice (CIP) or the Fellowship of the Insurance Institute (FCII) to advance their careers further. A degree in Business, Finance, or Law at Level 7 or Level 8 from a technological university or university is an advantage but is not always required for entry-level positions.
Most Claims Handlers begin in a junior or trainee role within an insurance company, broker, or loss-adjusting firm, studying towards their APA qualification while gaining practical experience. With a few years of experience and completion of further Insurance Institute qualifications such as the CIP, you can progress to a Senior Claims Handler or Team Leader position. From there, career development can lead into Claims Management, Underwriting, or Risk roles, or into specialist areas such as liability, large loss, or fraud investigation. Some experienced professionals move into loss adjusting or consulting, working independently or for specialist firms.
Artificial intelligence is already being used by Irish insurers to automate the initial triage of straightforward claims, such as minor motor damage, using image recognition and data analysis tools. This means Claims Handlers are increasingly focused on complex, disputed, or high-value claims that require human judgement, empathy, and negotiation skills. AI-powered fraud detection tools are becoming standard, assisting handlers in flagging suspicious patterns more quickly than manual review allows. Rather than replacing Claims Handlers, AI is shifting the role towards higher-value casework and decision-making, making professional qualifications and analytical skills more important than ever.
