As a Concrete Finisher you work on construction sites preparing, pouring, and finishing concrete surfaces to precise standards. Your daily tasks include setting up and removing formwork, pouring concrete into moulds, and using tools such as screeds, floats, and trowels to level and smooth surfaces. You monitor the curing process carefully, checking for cracks, corrosion, or imperfections, and apply finishing techniques such as chamfering edges to prevent chipping. You work closely with other tradespeople, site foremen, and civil engineers to ensure surfaces meet specification and safety requirements. The role is physically demanding and is carried out mostly outdoors or in large commercial or industrial buildings across Ireland.
Listen: a day as a Concrete Finisher
Your alarm goes off at 5:45 a.m. The site start is 7:00 a.m. sharp, so you eat quickly, pull on your work clothes, and drive to the commercial construction site on the outskirts of town. You sign in at the gatehouse, collect your PPE — hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel-toe boots, and safety glasses — and head to the morning toolbox talk, where the site foreman runs through the day's hazards and the concrete pour schedule. By 7:30 a.m. you are helping the crew set up the formwork for a ground-floor slab. Formwork is the temporary wooden or steel mould that holds wet concrete in shape while it sets. You check that the boards are level using a spirit level and that they are firmly braced so nothing shifts during the pour. The work is physical from the start — lifting, bending, and hammering in cold morning air.
There are no strict Leaving Certificate requirements to enter this trade, though subjects such as Construction Studies, Mathematics, and Technical Graphics are helpful preparation. Most Concrete Finishers in Ireland enter through on-the-job training with a construction contractor or through a QQI Level 5 Construction Skills course offered by ETBs and Colleges of Further Education. The SOLAS apprenticeship system offers related construction pathways, and experience gained through labour roles on site is a recognised route into specialised concrete finishing work. Short-course certifications in areas such as Safe Pass, Manual Handling, and powered-float operation are typically required by employers and can be completed through SOLAS-registered training providers. Progression to supervisory roles may involve further QQI awards at Level 6 in construction supervision or site management.
Most Concrete Finishers begin as general construction labourers or trainees with a contractor, learning finishing skills on the job under the supervision of experienced tradespeople. With a few years of site experience and relevant certifications, you can progress to working independently on specialist concrete projects such as industrial floors, infrastructure works, or decorative concrete. Experienced finishers often move into roles such as gang leader or site supervisor, taking responsibility for a team of operatives. Further qualifications in construction management can open pathways into site foreman or contracts management positions.
AI is beginning to influence concrete finishing through the use of automated screeding machines and laser-guided levelling systems that improve the speed and accuracy of surface preparation. Sensors embedded in concrete mixes can now monitor curing conditions in real time, reducing the need for manual inspection at certain stages. However, the hands-on, reactive nature of finishing work — particularly on complex or irregular surfaces — means that skilled human judgement remains essential and cannot be easily automated. Concrete Finishers who become comfortable using technology-assisted tools will be well placed as the industry adopts smarter site practices.
