Retail & Customer Service
As a Customer Experience Manager you own the end-to-end journey a customer has with a brand, from first contact through to after-sales support and complaints resolution. You monitor key performance indicators such as Net Promoter Score (NPS), customer satisfaction ratings and first-contact resolution rates, using these insights to identify where improvements can be made across all touchpoints. Day-to-day you lead a team of customer service representatives and team leaders, running briefings, reviewing call and contact data, and working cross-functionally with marketing, operations and IT to remove friction from the customer experience. You also design and implement policies for handling escalated complaints, ensuring that responses are consistent, fair and in line with company standards and consumer protection legislation.
Listen: a day as a Customer Experience Manager
You arrive at the office just before eight-thirty, grab a coffee and open your dashboard on Salesforce to check overnight contact volumes. Your team handles queries across phone, email and live chat, so you scan the queue backlogs first. Two of last night's escalations — a delivery dispute and a billing complaint — are still unresolved, so you flag them for your senior team leader to prioritise before the phones get busy. At nine o'clock you run the daily team briefing in the contact centre floor. You go through yesterday's Net Promoter Score, which came in at forty-two, slightly below the weekly target of forty-five. You remind the team about the updated script for handling refund requests, which came into effect following a policy change agreed with the operations director last Friday.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum qualification for this role; relevant disciplines include Business, Marketing, Management or Psychology, available at universities and technological universities across Ireland such as TU Dublin, UCC and University of Galway. Leaving Certificate subjects that build a strong foundation include Business, Economics, Mathematics and English, as analytical and communication skills are central to the work. Some professionals enter through a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor in Business or Retail Management, supplementing this with experience and later undertaking a Level 9 postgraduate qualification in areas such as Marketing, Customer Experience or MBA programmes. Springboard+ funded courses at Level 6 to Level 9, often focused on digital business or data analytics, provide an alternative upskilling route for those already working in customer-facing roles. No statutory registration body oversees this profession, but membership of bodies such as the Customer Experience Professionals Association (CXPA) or the Chartered Institute of Marketing is valued by many Irish employers.
Many Customer Experience Managers begin their careers in frontline customer service or contact centre agent roles, progressing through team leader and supervisor positions before stepping into management. A relevant degree combined with three to five years of operational experience in retail, financial services, telecoms or e-commerce is a common profile for a first appointment at this level in Ireland. From here, career progression typically leads to Head of Customer Experience, Director of Customer Operations or Chief Customer Officer roles within larger Irish or multinational organisations. Pursuing a Level 9 qualification such as an MBA or a postgraduate diploma in Digital Marketing or Service Management strengthens the pathway to senior leadership.
Artificial intelligence is transforming the tools available to Customer Experience Managers, with AI-powered chatbots, sentiment analysis platforms and predictive customer analytics becoming standard features of contact centre operations in Ireland. Routine query handling is increasingly automated, shifting the focus of customer service teams towards complex, high-value interactions that require empathy and judgement. Customer Experience Managers must now be competent in interpreting AI-generated insights and in managing the human-AI balance within their teams, ensuring that automation enhances rather than diminishes the customer relationship. Those who develop skills in AI tool evaluation, prompt design and ethical customer data use will be best placed to lead effectively in this evolving environment.
