What does an Early Childhood Educator do?

As an Early Childhood Educator you work with young children typically from birth to six years of age, supporting their learning, play, and development in crèches, nurseries, preschools, and other early learning and care (ELC) settings. Your daily work involves planning and delivering age-appropriate activities that build children's language, numeracy, social, and creative skills, often guided by the national curriculum framework Aistear and the quality framework Síolta. You observe and document each child's progress, communicate regularly with parents and guardians, and work closely with colleagues, special needs assistants, and visiting professionals such as speech and language therapists. Maintaining a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment is central to everything you do, and you are responsible for safeguarding children's wellbeing at all times.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Early Childhood Educator

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the preschool room of a community crèche in Athlone at 7.45 a.m., fifteen minutes before the doors open. You switch on the heating, check that the hand-washing stations are stocked, and set out the morning invitation to play — today it is a small-world farm scene with loose parts that links to the Aistear theme of Exploring and Thinking you planned last week. You sign the daily attendance register and run your eye over the allergy chart pinned beside the snack press. Children begin arriving from 8.00 a.m. You greet each child by name, crouch to their level, and exchange a brief word with every parent or childminder dropping off. One mother mentions her son had a restless night, so you make a note in his daily diary and flag it quietly to your room leader. By 8.30 a.m. the room holds twelve children aged three to five and the noise level rises quickly.

Required Education

A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Early Learning and Care or a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate is the recognised minimum qualification required to work in an Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) setting in Ireland, as set out under the Core Funding and ECCE scheme requirements. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Home Economics, Biology, and SPHE provide a useful foundation, though no specific LC subjects are mandated for entry to Level 5 PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education. For room leader and graduate-led roles attracting higher Core Funding rates, employers typically require a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor's degree or Level 8 Honours Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Care, available at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, MTU, SETU, TUS, and Mary Immaculate College (MIC) in Limerick. Some graduates enter via a PLC course at Level 5 or 6 and then progress through the CAO or via add-on degree routes to reach Level 7 or 8. There is no single statutory professional register for early childhood educators in Ireland at present, though Tusla registers ELC services and workforce qualifications are verified through the National Childcare Scheme (NCS) and Core Funding graduate requirements. Continuing professional development (CPD) is strongly encouraged, and schemes such as Springboard+ sometimes offer funded pathways to degree-level qualifications for those already working in the sector.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most early childhood educators begin in assistant or childcare worker roles after completing a QQI Level 5 or 6 qualification, gaining hands-on experience across different age groups within a setting. With a Level 7 or 8 degree, you can progress to a room leader or graduate-led position, which also attracts higher pay rates under the Government's Core Funding scheme. Experienced practitioners may move into senior room leader, deputy manager, or service manager roles responsible for the day-to-day running of a crèche or preschool. Further progression can lead into roles such as early years specialist, area manager for a group of settings, Túsla inspector, early years advisor with a City or County Childcare Committee (CCC), or academic and training roles in further and higher education.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are beginning to assist early childhood educators with administrative tasks such as generating observation reports, compiling developmental records, and planning activity ideas, freeing up more time for direct interaction with children. Digital platforms and apps that support learning documentation and parent communication are increasingly common in Irish settings, and familiarity with these tools is becoming a practical advantage. However, the core of this occupation — building secure attachments with very young children, reading non-verbal cues, and providing emotional warmth and physical care — cannot be replicated by AI, making this a profession with strong human-centred resilience. Educators who embrace appropriate digital tools while maintaining high-quality relational practice are likely to be best placed as technology continues to evolve in the sector.
