What does an Embedded Software Engineer do?

As an Embedded Software Engineer you write and maintain the low-level software — often called firmware — that runs directly on microcontrollers, microprocessors and other hardware devices, from medical instruments and industrial machines to consumer electronics and connected IoT products. Your daily work involves translating hardware specifications into reliable, efficient code, typically in C or C++, and using integrated development environments and debugging tools to test that the software behaves correctly on the physical device. You collaborate closely with hardware engineers, systems architects, quality assurance teams and, in regulated industries such as medical devices, with regulatory affairs specialists to ensure the product meets strict standards. Documentation is a significant part of the role: you produce technical specifications, flowcharts and configuration management records that support both development and regulatory audits.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Embedded Software Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the office just before eight-thirty, grab a coffee and open your laptop. The first thing you do is check the overnight build log from the continuous integration system — automated checks that compile your team's code and flag errors without anyone having to run them manually. There is one failure linked to a memory allocation function you modified yesterday, so you note it down before the stand-up meeting at nine. The stand-up lasts about fifteen minutes. You are working on firmware for a cardiac monitoring device, so your team includes hardware engineers, a systems architect and a regulatory affairs specialist. Because the product falls under EU Medical Device Regulation, every software change must be documented to a standard called IEC 62304, which defines how medical software must be developed and tested. The regulatory specialist reminds everyone that a design review is scheduled for Thursday.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline is the typical entry requirement. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Mathematics (Higher Level is strongly advisable), Physics, Applied Mathematics and Engineering. Programmes such as BE/BEng in Electronic and Computer Engineering at University of Limerick, University of Galway or MTU Cork, or BEng in Computer Engineering at TU Dublin, are common pathways. Some engineers progress to a Level 9 Masters in Embedded Systems or Signal Processing to specialise further, particularly for roles in semiconductor design or medical device firmware. No statutory registration body exists for software engineers in Ireland, though membership of Engineers Ireland and Chartered Engineer (CEng) status are well-regarded professional milestones in the industry.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Embedded Software Engineers begin as junior or graduate engineers within a product company or electronics consultancy, working under senior colleagues on discrete firmware modules. After three to five years of hands-on experience, engineers typically take ownership of complete subsystems, mentor junior staff and liaise directly with hardware and systems teams. Senior engineers may progress to lead engineer or principal engineer roles, shaping system architecture and driving technical standards across a product line. Further progression can lead to engineering management, chief engineer positions or specialisation in areas such as functional safety (IEC 61508, ISO 26262) or medical device software (IEC 62304), which attract a significant premium in the Irish market.

AI Impact on the job

AI-assisted coding tools are beginning to accelerate routine firmware tasks such as boilerplate code generation, unit test creation and static analysis, allowing engineers to focus more on system-level design and safety verification. However, the deeply hardware-specific, safety-critical nature of embedded work means that automated tools require careful human oversight, and AI cannot yet replicate the contextual judgement needed when debugging obscure hardware interactions. Engineers who can effectively use AI code assistants while critically evaluating their output for correctness and safety compliance will have a productive advantage. Overall, AI is more likely to reshape embedded engineering workflows than to reduce the overall need for skilled practitioners in this domain.
