What does an English Language Teacher do?

As an English Language Teacher, you teach English to non-native speakers, helping them develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills across a range of levels from beginner to advanced. Your daily work involves planning and delivering engaging lessons, creating or selecting appropriate materials, and tailoring your approach to suit learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. You regularly assess student progress through tests, assignments, and informal observation, providing constructive feedback to support improvement. You may work in a range of settings including accredited English language schools, community education programmes, secondary schools, or universities, often alongside academic coordinators, support staff, and other language teachers. Building positive relationships with your learners and creating an inclusive, communicative classroom environment is central to the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an English Language Teacher

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the English language school in Dublin city centre just before half eight, signing in at the front desk and checking your pigeonhole for any messages from the academic coordinator. The school is accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland, and your classes today range from a pre-intermediate group of adult learners from Brazil and Syria to an upper-intermediate group preparing for the IELTS exam. You spend twenty minutes reviewing your lesson plan, printing a gap-fill exercise on conditionals, and checking that the interactive whiteboard is working. Your first class starts at nine. You have fourteen students and spend the opening fifteen minutes on a speaking warm-up, encouraging a shy Ukrainian student to contribute while managing a confident Spaniard who tends to dominate discussion. Keeping the balance is something you are always conscious of. You move through grammar input, controlled practice, and a short reading task before wrapping up at ten.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum requirement, usually in English, Linguistics, Education, or a related humanities subject. In addition, a recognised English language teaching qualification such as a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) or an equivalent TEFL/TESOL certificate is widely expected by employers, particularly in accredited language schools in Ireland. If you wish to teach English as a subject in an Irish secondary school, you must register with the Teaching Council and complete an accredited initial teacher education (ITE) programme at NFQ Level 8 or 9, such as a Professional Master of Education (PME). Many language schools in Ireland operate under ACELS (Accreditation and Co-ordination of English Language Services) recognition, and teachers in these settings are expected to hold appropriate qualifications and demonstrate ongoing professional development. PLC courses in languages or communications can provide a useful foundation, but will not substitute for degree-level qualifications in this field. Postgraduate diplomas and master's programmes in Applied Linguistics or TESOL are increasingly valued for career progression and academic roles.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many English Language Teachers begin their careers in Ireland's busy summer EFL (English as a Foreign Language) sector, which attracts thousands of international students annually, particularly to Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Limerick. With experience and additional qualifications, you can progress to senior teacher or academic coordinator roles within a language school, taking on responsibility for curriculum development, teacher training, and quality assurance. Those with a Teaching Council registration and an ITE qualification may move into permanent or fixed-term posts in secondary schools, where career progression can lead to subject head of department or deputy principal positions. Further postgraduate study in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or Education Management opens pathways into third-level lecturing, educational research, or roles with bodies such as ACELS or the Department of Education.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered language learning platforms and tools such as grammar checkers, pronunciation coaches, and automated writing feedback are changing how students practise English outside the classroom, reducing some of the repetitive drilling that teachers traditionally managed. However, the interpersonal, motivational, and culturally responsive dimensions of English language teaching remain beyond current AI capability, keeping the human teacher central to effective learning. Teachers who integrate AI tools thoughtfully into their lessons — for example, using them to personalise practice activities or analyse learner errors — are likely to become more effective and sought-after. Professional development in educational technology is increasingly important for English Language Teachers who wish to remain current in their practice.
