What does an Investment Adviser do?

As an Investment Adviser you guide clients on how to grow and protect their money by recommending suitable financial products such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. You review each client's financial situation, risk appetite and long-term goals before building or adjusting a tailored investment portfolio. Your working day involves monitoring Irish and global markets, analysing trends in equities and bonds, and producing clear reports that explain complex financial information in plain language. You work closely with clients ranging from private individuals and families to small business owners, as well as with colleagues in wealth management, banking and stockbroking firms regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Investment Adviser

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the office just before eight o'clock, grab a coffee and pull up Bloomberg and your firm's portfolio management system before the phones start ringing. The first thing you do is scan overnight market movements — Wall Street's close, Asian indices and any early signals from the Frankfurt and London opens. A rate decision from the European Central Bank is expected later this week, and it could affect the Irish government bond positions several of your clients hold, so you flag that in your notes. By half eight you are at your desk reviewing a report you drafted yesterday for a retired teacher in her late sixties who wants to move a portion of her savings into lower-risk assets. You check that the products you recommended are on the Central Bank of Ireland's authorised list and that your suitability assessment is fully documented — that paperwork is non-negotiable under MiFID II regulations, which govern how investment advice must be given across the EU.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum entry point for this role. Relevant undergraduate programmes include Business, Finance, Economics, Financial Mathematics or Accounting, available at universities such as UCD, UCC, TCD, DCU, University of Galway and UL, as well as technological universities like TU Dublin. Many employers also expect graduates to hold or be working towards professional qualifications such as the QFA (Qualified Financial Adviser) designation awarded by the Life Insurance Association of Ireland, or the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) qualification. Some entrants progress through a Level 9 Masters in Finance or Financial Risk to strengthen their prospects for more senior advisory roles. All investment advisers operating in Ireland must be authorised or registered with the Central Bank of Ireland under the Consumer Protection Code, and firms must ensure their advisers meet the Minimum Competency Code requirements. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics, Economics, Business and Accounting provide a strong foundation for undergraduate study in this area.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Investment Advisers begin as graduate trainees or junior analysts within a stockbroking firm, private bank or wealth management company, gaining supervised client-facing experience while completing required regulatory qualifications such as the QFA. With three to five years of experience and a growing client book, you typically progress to a full Investment Adviser or Portfolio Manager role with greater autonomy over client relationships and asset allocation decisions. Senior advisers may move into discretionary fund management, head of wealth management positions, or specialise in areas such as pension planning or ESG investing. Pursuing the CFA charter or a Level 9 Masters in Finance can accelerate progression into senior and leadership roles.

AI Impact on the job

Artificial intelligence is transforming the data-gathering and market-monitoring aspects of investment advice, with robo-advisory platforms and algorithmic tools now handling routine portfolio screening and performance reporting. However, the nuanced, relationship-driven nature of personalised investment advice means that human judgement, emotional intelligence and regulatory accountability remain central to the role. Investment Advisers who embrace AI tools for portfolio analytics and client reporting are likely to handle larger client books more efficiently rather than face displacement. Ongoing upskilling in data literacy and familiarity with AI-driven financial platforms is increasingly expected by Irish employers.
