What does a Multilingual Customer Support Agent do?

As a Multilingual Customer Support Agent you handle incoming queries from customers across Europe, responding by phone, email, live chat and social media on behalf of international companies based in Ireland. Your daily work involves answering questions about products, services, pricing and company policies, always aiming to resolve issues quickly and leave the customer satisfied. You keep accurate records of every interaction in a customer relationship management (CRM) system and escalate complex cases to specialist teams when needed. You typically work in a busy contact centre environment in Dublin, Cork or Limerick alongside colleagues from many different countries, each supporting customers in their native language. Close teamwork with team leaders, quality analysts and back-office staff is a regular part of the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Multilingual Customer Support Agent

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the contact centre at 8.45 for a nine o'clock start, badge in at the door and drop your things at your assigned desk. The open-plan floor is already filling up with colleagues from France, Germany, Brazil and Poland, each assigned to their own language queue. You log into the CRM system, check the team briefing notes left by the night shift and skim any unresolved tickets flagged for your attention before the phones go live. By half nine the calls are coming in steadily. A customer in Lyon is unhappy about a delayed parcel and wants a refund. You pull up her order in the CRM, check the courier tracking details and explain the refund policy calmly in French. She is frustrated at first, but by the end of the call she thanks you. You log every detail of the interaction before the next call connects.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate is the most common entry requirement, and subjects such as a modern language (French, German, Spanish, Italian or Polish), English, Business and Communications are particularly useful. Many agents enter directly from school or from a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Business Administration, Customer Service or IT Support at a College of Further Education. Fluency in at least one EU language beyond English is usually the core hiring criterion and often matters more to employers than formal qualifications. Some larger employers such as multinational technology and financial services firms provide structured in-house training programmes lasting several weeks before you take your first live call. No statutory professional registration is required for this role, though industry certifications in customer service or specific software platforms can support career progression.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most people begin as front-line agents handling inbound queries before moving into a senior agent or subject-matter-expert role after one to two years of solid performance. From there, progression typically leads to team leader or quality assurance analyst positions, where you coach newer staff and monitor service standards. With further experience, roles in workforce management, operations management or training and development become accessible, sometimes supported by a part-time Level 7 or Level 8 business degree through institutions such as TU Dublin or UL. Ambitious professionals sometimes move laterally into account management, human resources or project coordination within the same multinational environment.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are already handling a growing share of routine, repetitive enquiries such as order tracking, password resets and basic account information, reducing the volume of straightforward contacts that human agents deal with. As a result, the queries that reach you are increasingly complex, emotionally sensitive or commercially significant, requiring genuine judgement and empathy that automated tools cannot reliably replicate. AI-assisted tools also support agents in real time by suggesting answers, flagging compliance risks and auto-filling CRM records, which can improve both speed and accuracy. Agents who develop skills in using and interpreting these AI tools, alongside strong interpersonal abilities, will be best positioned as the role continues to evolve.
