As an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor you plan, deliver, and supervise a wide range of outdoor activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, archery, abseiling, hillwalking, and orienteering for groups of all ages and abilities. You are responsible for ensuring the safety of participants at all times, conducting risk assessments before and during sessions, and adapting activities to suit the needs and experience levels of your group. Your working environment is primarily outdoors — on water, on rock faces, in forests, or on open hillsides — though you will also spend time indoors on equipment checks, administration, and activity planning. You work alongside fellow instructors, centre managers, and external groups such as schools, youth organisations, corporate clients, and sports clubs. Equipment maintenance and adherence to national governing-body guidelines form a key part of your daily responsibilities.
Listen: a day as an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor
Your alarm goes off at 7:00 a.m. You are based at an outdoor activity centre in County Wicklow, and today you have two school groups booked — a morning kayaking session and an afternoon rock-climbing taster. Before anyone arrives, you head to the equipment store to check your fleet of sit-on-top kayaks, paddles, and buoyancy aids. Every buoyancy aid is tested for fit and condition and logged on the centre's equipment check sheet. If anything looks worn or damaged, it goes straight to the out-of-service rack. By 9:30 a.m. the first bus pulls in, thirty second-year students from a Dublin school on a day trip. You run a shoreside safety briefing, covering water safety rules, how to re-enter a kayak, and what the whistle signals mean. You keep the language simple and practical, and you watch for the students who look nervous — they get a bit of extra reassurance before getting on the water.

icould career stories
Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
Leaving Certificate subjects such as Physical Education, Biology, Geography, and Irish are useful preparation for a career in outdoor pursuits instruction. The most direct higher education route is a Level 7 Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Education or Adventure Sports, offered at institutions such as ATU Donegal or SETU Waterford, with a Level 6 Higher Certificate also available at some centres. PLC courses at Level 5 in Sport and Recreation or Outdoor Education offered through Colleges of Further Education and ETBs provide an alternative entry point and can lead on to higher education via the CAO linked or supplementary admissions routes. Critically, most employers require national governing-body (NGB) awards relevant to your chosen disciplines — for example, Paddle Ireland awards for kayaking, Mountaineering Ireland awards for hillwalking and climbing, or Surfing Ireland qualifications for surf instruction. These awards are discipline-specific, competency-based, and earned through a combination of assessed practice and course attendance. Some instructors build their award portfolio progressively while working in adventure centres, earning qualifications alongside practical experience.
Most instructors begin in seasonal or part-time roles at adventure centres, summer camps, or activity providers, building up their NGB award portfolio and gaining experience across multiple disciplines. With a few years of experience and a broader set of qualifications, you can progress to a senior instructor or activity coordinator role, taking on responsibility for staff supervision, programme development, and health and safety compliance. Further progression can lead to a centre management position, where you oversee daily operations, staffing, budgeting, and client relations. Some experienced instructors move into specialist areas such as therapeutic outdoor education, corporate team development facilitation, or lecturer roles in further and higher education outdoor programmes.
AI has a relatively limited direct impact on the core practical delivery of outdoor pursuits instruction, which depends on human judgment, physical skill, and real-time responsiveness in unpredictable environments. However, AI-assisted tools are increasingly used for session planning, risk assessment documentation, and participant progress tracking, reducing administrative workload for instructors. Wearable technology and smart monitoring systems may assist with tracking participants' physical metrics during activities, adding a data-informed dimension to safety management. Overall, the hands-on, relational, and environment-dependent nature of the role means that human instructors remain central and AI is more likely to support than replace them.
