Retail & Customer Service
As a Pharmacy Retail Assistant you work on the shop floor of a community pharmacy, helping customers select over-the-counter medicines, health supplements, skincare products and medical supplies. You advise customers on the appropriate use of non-prescription medications, refer more complex queries to the supervising pharmacist, and ensure that shelves are well-stocked and products are within their expiry dates. Day-to-day tasks include operating the till, processing payments, organising storage areas and maintaining a clean, orderly retail environment. You work closely with registered pharmacists and dispenary technicians, and you may also provide basic dispensary support such as labelling or preparing orders under supervision.
Listen: a day as a Pharmacy Retail Assistant
You arrive at the pharmacy at 8.45 a.m., quarter of an hour before the doors open. The supervising pharmacist is already in the dispensary checking the controlled-drug register, and the dispensary technician is loading the prescription queue on the PMR system — the patient medication record software the pharmacy uses to process scripts. Your first job is to walk the shop floor with a clipboard, scanning for gaps on the shelves and noting anything that needs to be pulled from the back stock room. By 9.00 a.m. the shutters are up and the first customers arrive. An older gentleman asks whether ibuprofen gel is suitable for a swollen knee. You explain the basic directions, remind him to check with the pharmacist if he is on any other medicines, and walk him over to the OTC pain-relief section. When a younger woman asks about a rash on her wrist, you know that is outside your scope, so you tell her you will ask the pharmacist to have a quick word — exactly the kind of referral you are trained to make.
Entry to this role typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, though no specific subjects are strictly required; Biology, Chemistry and Home Economics can be useful background for understanding medicines and health products. Many employers value a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Retail Practice, Pharmacy Sales or Healthcare Support, available through PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education. The Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) recognises short continuing professional development courses in areas such as medicines counter assistance, which are increasingly expected by community pharmacy employers. No statutory registration with a regulator such as CORU is required for this role, though working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist is mandatory by law for any dispensary-related duties. Previous retail or customer service experience is a practical advantage when applying for these positions.
Most Pharmacy Retail Assistants begin on the shop floor of a community pharmacy, gaining confidence in product knowledge and customer interaction. With experience and further QQI or IIOP-accredited training, you can progress to a senior medicines counter assistant or dispensary support technician role. Some individuals use this position as a stepping stone, going on to study for a QQI Level 6 pharmacy technician award or even pursuing the five-year MPharm degree at institutions such as RCSI, UCC or TCD to qualify as a pharmacist. Opportunities also exist to move into pharmacy area management or retail operations roles within large pharmacy chains.
AI-powered stock management and automated ordering systems are gradually reducing the manual effort involved in inventory tasks in larger pharmacy chains. Customer-facing chatbots and health information apps can answer basic product queries online, but the reassurance and personalised judgement of a human counter assistant remain important, particularly for sensitive health concerns. AI tools that flag drug interactions or prompt expiry checks may support assistants in their daily work rather than replace them. Overall, the interpersonal and advisory aspects of the role are expected to remain distinctly human for the foreseeable future.
