What does a Social Counsellor do?

As a Social Counsellor you provide professional guidance and emotional support to individuals, couples, and families experiencing personal difficulties such as depression, addiction, relationship breakdown, or crisis situations. You work with clients to help them understand their circumstances, explore their options, and make positive changes in their lives using approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and client-centred counselling. Your caseload may include people referred by GPs, Tusla, or the HSE, as well as walk-in clients from community services, and you will typically hold regular one-to-one or group sessions in clinics, community centres, or voluntary organisations. You collaborate closely with social workers, psychologists, GPs, and other allied health professionals to ensure clients receive the most appropriate support and referrals. Keeping detailed case notes and maintaining strict confidentiality are central duties of the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Social Counsellor

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:15 a.m. Before leaving home you review your caseload on your secure HSE-approved client management system, checking for any urgent notes left by the duty worker overnight. You are based at a community counselling service run through an ETB-funded resource centre in a provincial town, and you share a small office with one colleague. You arrive at 8:45 a.m., sign in, and spend fifteen minutes reading through the case files of the five clients you will see today, making sure your session notes from the previous week are fully updated and GDPR-compliant. Your first appointment at 9:00 a.m. is a forty-year-old man referred by his GP after a period of prolonged low mood. You use a person-centred approach, listening carefully, reflecting his words back, and collaboratively agreeing goals for the coming fortnight. You record the session summary immediately afterwards on the shared electronic record, noting any risk indicators.

Required Education

Helpful Leaving Certificate subjects include Psychology, Biology, English, and SPHE, as these develop the analytical and communication skills you will need. Most Social Counsellors in Ireland hold at least an NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor's degree in Counselling, Social Care, or Psychology, with many employers preferring a Level 8 Honours Bachelor's degree in Counselling or a closely related discipline. Programmes are offered at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, and UL, among others, and typically include a significant supervised placement component. Professional accreditation from the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) or the Irish Association for Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) is widely expected by employers and requires you to accumulate a minimum number of supervised client hours after graduation. Some practitioners enter through a PLC course in Social Care (QQI Level 5 or 6) and then progress to a degree via the CAO or a recognised bridging pathway. Social counselling is a regulated profession monitored by CORU, and future statutory registration requirements may apply as the sector evolves.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Social Counsellors begin in assistant or support roles within community organisations, voluntary agencies, or the HSE while completing their supervised practice hours required for IACP accreditation. Once accredited, you may work as a qualified counsellor in a community health centre, addiction service, Tusla family support project, or a private practice setting. With experience, you can move into senior counsellor or team leader positions, or specialise in areas such as addiction, trauma, bereavement, or youth counselling. Further study at NFQ Level 9, such as a Master's in Counselling and Psychotherapy, opens pathways into clinical supervision, service management, or academic lecturing.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are increasingly used to support administrative tasks such as scheduling, note summarisation, and outcome tracking, freeing Social Counsellors to spend more time in direct client work. Digital therapeutic platforms and AI-assisted screening tools may help with initial assessments or between-session support, but they cannot replicate the empathy, relational depth, and clinical judgement that effective counselling requires. Ethical questions around data privacy, client consent, and the limits of AI in mental health care mean that human oversight remains essential in this field. Overall, AI is likely to augment rather than replace the Social Counsellor's role, while also creating a need for practitioners to develop digital literacy skills.
