What does a Sound Engineer do?

As a Sound Engineer you design, set up, and operate audio equipment to achieve the best possible sound quality for live performances, studio recordings, or post-production work. Your daily tasks include rigging speakers and microphones, tuning wireless audio systems, running soundchecks with artists and performers, and operating mixing consoles during shows or recording sessions. You collaborate closely with stage managers, musicians, lighting technicians, road crew, and production managers to deliver a seamless experience for audiences. Depending on your specialism, you may work front of house in a concert venue, inside a recording studio, or on post-production for television and film. The role often involves unsociable hours, travel, and working in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor environments.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Sound Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

It is 9:30 on a Tuesday morning and you are pulling into the loading bay of a mid-sized Dublin venue ahead of a touring band's evening show. Your van holds flightcases packed with cables, DI boxes, and a spare wireless receiver unit. The stage manager meets you at the dock and hands you the production rider, a document from the band listing exactly what microphones, monitors, and mixing console specifications they expect. You spend the next hour cross-checking the rider against what the house has available. By 11:00 you are up on stage with two members of the road crew, rigging speaker hangs and running multicore cable, which is the thick bundle that carries every audio signal between the stage and your front-of-house mixing position out in the middle of the floor. It is physical work and the venue is cold. You label every channel on your console using gaffer tape and a marker so nothing gets lost in the dark later.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Music, Physics, Applied Mathematics, and subjects in the technology cluster, though a practical portfolio of work and hands-on experience are equally valued. A Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Music Technology, Audio Engineering, or a related field — offered at institutions such as IADT, TUS, and Pulse College — provides a strong academic foundation alongside studio and live production practice. Some entrants begin through a Level 5 or Level 6 QQI/PLC course in Sound Engineering or Music Technology at a College of Further Education, which can serve as a pathway into degree programmes or directly into the industry. There is no statutory professional registration body for Sound Engineers in Ireland, but membership of industry networks and building a strong professional reputation through credits and references are essential for career progression. Continual self-directed learning in new audio software, hardware, and live production technology is expected throughout your career.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Sound Engineers start out as assistants or stage crew, loading equipment and learning the signal chain under the supervision of experienced engineers, often on a freelance or casual basis. With experience, you progress to operating as a front-of-house or monitor engineer on touring productions, or as a recording or assistant engineer in a studio. Mid-career professionals may specialise in a particular area — such as live touring, broadcast audio, or post-production for film and television — and build a roster of regular clients or employers. Senior engineers and experienced freelancers often take on system design responsibilities, production management roles, or move into audio education and training.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered tools are increasingly used in audio production for tasks such as noise reduction, automatic mixing assistance, and dialogue restoration in post-production, which can speed up certain workflows significantly. Intelligent loudness management and AI-driven acoustic analysis tools are also becoming common in both live and studio environments. However, the creative judgement, real-time problem-solving, and interpersonal skills required to manage a live performance or guide a recording session remain distinctly human and are not easily replicated by automation. Sound Engineers who embrace these tools and integrate them into their practice are likely to find them time-saving rather than threatening to their core role.
