Beauty & Personal Care
As a Spa Therapist you provide a range of beauty and wellness treatments to clients in hotel spas, destination spas, wellness centres, and health clubs across Ireland. Your daily work includes welcoming guests, explaining treatment menus, carrying out services such as massages, facials, body wraps, and hydrotherapy sessions, and ensuring treatment rooms are clean and fully stocked between appointments. You work closely with a team of fellow therapists, reception staff, and spa managers to deliver a consistently high standard of client care. Maintaining accurate client records, recommending retail products, and handling bookings or complaints professionally are also key parts of the role.
Listen: a day as a Spa Therapist
Your alarm goes off at 7.15 on a Tuesday morning. You are working the early shift at a hotel spa in County Wicklow, so you arrive by 8.00 to give yourself time to set up before the first client at 9.00. You check the booking system, print the day's treatment schedule, and read through each client's consultation card, noting any allergies, medical conditions, or preferences recorded from previous visits. You restock your treatment room with fresh towels, check that your heated blanket and massage couch are at the right temperature, and mix the oils you will need for the morning. Your first client is booked for a 60-minute Swedish massage. Before you begin, you run through a brief verbal consultation to confirm nothing has changed since their last visit and to explain exactly what the treatment involves. The massage itself requires sustained physical effort and precise technique, and by the time you finish you are already preparing the room for a facial at 10.15.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
Most Spa Therapists in Ireland enter the profession through a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 certificate in Beauty Therapy, Spa Therapy, or Holistic Massage, offered at Colleges of Further Education and ETBs throughout the country. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Home Economics, and Physical Education provide a useful foundation, while good results in English support client communication skills. International qualifications such as ITEC and CIDESCO diplomas are widely recognised by Irish employers and can be completed through specialist beauty schools or further education colleges. Some larger hotel spas may favour applicants with a Level 6 Higher Certificate or a Level 7 ordinary bachelor's degree in Spa Management or Health and Wellness. There is no statutory registration body for spa therapists in Ireland, but professional membership with bodies such as the Irish Massage Therapists Association (IMTA) is valued by employers and clients alike.
Most Spa Therapists begin their careers as junior or trainee therapists in a hotel spa or wellness centre, building their treatment skills and client base under supervision. With experience, you can progress to a Senior Therapist role, taking on more complex treatments, mentoring new staff, and sometimes specialising in areas such as hydrotherapy, hot stone massage, or advanced facials. Further progression can lead to a Spa Supervisor or Spa Manager position, involving scheduling, team leadership, retail targets, and budget management. Ambitious therapists may go on to manage destination spa operations, work on luxury cruise ships, or establish their own independent practice.
AI is unlikely to replace the hands-on, human-centred nature of spa therapy, as clients specifically seek the physical and emotional comfort of skilled human touch. However, AI-powered booking platforms, personalised treatment recommendation tools, and smart skincare analysis devices are increasingly being adopted by Irish spas to enhance the client experience. Administrative tasks such as scheduling, inventory management, and customer follow-up communications may be partly automated, freeing therapists to focus more time on treatments. Staying current with technology-assisted skincare diagnostics and digital client management systems will become a useful additional skill for therapists.
