As a Technical Product Manager you own the strategy, roadmap, and day-to-day priorities for a software or technology product throughout its entire lifecycle. You work closely with engineers, designers, data analysts, and commercial stakeholders to translate business needs and user feedback into clearly defined product requirements and features. Much of your time is spent running discovery sessions, writing user stories, refining backlogs, and making trade-off decisions about what the team builds next and why. You also track key product metrics, oversee quality standards, and communicate progress to leadership, clients, and cross-functional teams. In Ireland, you will typically be based in a tech company, a multinational's EMEA headquarters, a scaling start-up, or a financial services firm with a large digital function.
Listen: a day as a Technical Product Manager
Your alarm goes off at 7:15 am. You commute into Dublin city centre, grabbing a coffee before reaching the office at around 8:45 am. You work for a mid-sized software company based in the Silicon Docks area, where your team builds a SaaS platform used by logistics companies across Europe. Before your first meeting, you spend twenty minutes in Jira reviewing the backlog — the prioritised list of features and fixes your engineering team will work through — and flagging two tickets that have incomplete acceptance criteria, meaning the engineers would not have enough information to build what you actually need. At 9:30 am you run the daily stand-up on Google Meet. Each engineer takes two minutes to say what they completed yesterday, what they are working on today, and whether anything is blocking them. One developer flags that a third-party API your platform depends on has changed its authentication method overnight, which means a sprint item needs to be rescheduled. You note it down and move on quickly so nobody's time is wasted.
Most Technical Product Managers in Ireland enter the role with at least an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree, typically in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business Information Systems, or a related discipline from institutions such as UCD, TCD, TU Dublin, University of Galway, or UCC. Leaving Certificate subjects that build a strong foundation include Mathematics, Computer Science, Business, and Physics. A postgraduate qualification such as an NFQ Level 9 Master's in Product Management, Technology Management, or an MBA with a digital specialism is increasingly common for those moving into senior roles. Industry certifications such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), PSPO from Scrum.org, or the AIPMM Certified Product Manager credential are widely valued by Irish employers and can supplement formal qualifications. There is no statutory registration body for this profession in Ireland, but active involvement in communities such as the Dublin Product Management Meetup or Product School is beneficial for career development.
Many Technical Product Managers begin as software developers, business analysts, or UX designers before transitioning into an Associate or Junior Product Manager role within a technology team. From there, progression typically moves through Product Manager to Senior Product Manager, where you own a significant product area and may begin mentoring others. With experience, you can advance to Principal Product Manager, Group Product Manager, or Director of Product, leading a portfolio of products and managing a team of PMs. At the top of the ladder, roles such as VP of Product or Chief Product Officer carry full P&L responsibility and strategic leadership across an entire product organisation.
AI tools are transforming how Technical Product Managers work, automating routine tasks such as summarising user research, generating draft user stories, and analysing large volumes of product telemetry data far more quickly than before. This frees PMs to focus on higher-order activities such as strategic prioritisation, stakeholder alignment, and nuanced customer discovery that require human judgement and empathy. At the same time, PMs are increasingly expected to define and manage AI-native features within their own products, requiring a working understanding of machine learning capabilities and limitations. Rather than replacing the role, AI is raising the bar for what good product management looks like, rewarding those who can combine technical literacy with creative and strategic thinking.
