As a Tour Organiser you plan, coordinate and oversee travel itineraries on behalf of tourists visiting Ireland or travelling abroad on group packages. You liaise with hotels, transport providers, attraction operators and local guides to ensure every element of a trip runs smoothly and on schedule. On the ground, you welcome tour groups at airports or meeting points, check travel documentation, manage check-in at accommodation and keep clients informed about timings, safety procedures and local customs. You work closely with inbound and outbound tourism operators, coach companies, cultural venues and, where required, HSE-approved medical facilities if a health issue arises during travel.
Listen: a day as a Tour Organiser
Your alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. because a group of forty-two American visitors is landing at Dublin Airport on an Aer Lingus flight from Boston at 7:50 a.m. You check your phone before you even get dressed — the flight is on time, which is a relief. You grab your printed manifest, a laminated list of every passenger name, room allocation and any dietary or medical note flagged on the booking form, and head out the door by 6:45 a.m. By 7:20 a.m. you are in Arrivals holding a sign with the tour company name. When the group emerges, you count heads against your manifest, collect a stray suitcase from the carousel with a passenger who missed the carousel belt, and do a quick check that everyone's passport is back in their own hands. The coach driver, who works for a contracted coach company, is waiting outside and you confirm the seating plan with him before departure.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Travel and Tourism Management, Tourism with Event Management, or a related Business and Hospitality programme at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, MTU or SETU is the most common route into tour organising. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Geography, Business, Modern Languages and English. A Level 6 QQI award in Travel and Tourism from a College of Further Education (PLC route) can serve as an alternative entry point or a stepping stone to a degree via the CAO or a Higher Education Links Scheme. Some operators, including CIÉ Tours and Fáilte Ireland-registered agencies, value candidates with IATA certification or additional language qualifications alongside their academic award. No statutory registration body currently governs tour organisers in Ireland, though membership of the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) is regarded positively by employers.
Most tour organisers begin in supporting roles such as travel consultant, reservations agent or tour assistant before taking on full itinerary responsibility for group travel. With a few years of practical experience, you may progress to Senior Tour Organiser or Product Manager, designing new routes and managing relationships with overseas partners. Larger Irish operators such as CIÉ Tours or Aer Lingus Holidays offer pathways into operations management or destination management roles. Experienced professionals sometimes move into tourism consultancy, Fáilte Ireland regional development work or set up their own specialist tour companies.
AI-powered booking platforms and itinerary-generation tools are automating some of the administrative tasks that tour organisers once handled manually, such as scheduling, supplier comparisons and document preparation. However, the human elements of the role — providing reassurance, adapting on-the-ground to unexpected events and building rapport with diverse groups — remain difficult to replicate through technology. AI-driven translation and real-time language assistance tools are becoming valuable aids for tour organisers working with multilingual groups. Overall, technology is likely to complement rather than replace this role, shifting the focus towards higher-value guest experience and relationship management.
