As a Tutor you provide personalised, one-to-one or small-group academic support to students at primary, secondary or third level, helping them to build confidence and improve their performance in specific subjects. You plan tailored sessions around each student's individual needs, pace and learning style, drawing on curriculum objectives set by the Department of Education and the relevant examination specifications. You assess student progress on an ongoing basis, give constructive feedback and adapt your teaching strategies when a student is struggling with particular concepts or skills. Many tutors in Ireland work independently from home or online, through tuition agencies, or as in-school learning support assistants working alongside classroom teachers and special education teachers.
Listen: a day as a Tutor
You start at half eight by reviewing your schedule on a shared Google Calendar. Today you have six sessions spread across the morning and afternoon, a mix of Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate students. Before your first call, you check the State Examinations Commission website to confirm the current marking scheme for Ordinary Level Maths, because one of your students is sitting a mock paper this week. At nine o'clock your first student logs on via Zoom. She is in Third Year and struggling with simultaneous equations. You work through two examples on a shared whiteboard tool, watch where her method breaks down, and make a quick note in her progress file that you keep in a simple spreadsheet. The session runs forty minutes and you spend the final five explaining what to practise before Friday.
A recognised qualification in the subject area you intend to teach is strongly valued, and a Leaving Certificate with solid Higher Level results in your chosen subjects provides the essential foundation. A QQI Level 6 award in Education and Training, delivered through PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education, is a common entry route for those who wish to tutor in a community or further education setting. Many tutors hold an NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 degree in a relevant discipline — for example, Mathematics, English, Science or Business — obtained through the CAO system at one of Ireland's universities or technological universities. Those wishing to work as learning support assistants in schools typically benefit from a QQI Level 5 or 6 award in Special Needs Assisting, available through SOLAS-funded ETB programmes. Registration with the Teaching Council is not a legal requirement for private tutors, but qualified teachers who also tutor privately will normally hold a Teaching Council-recognised postgraduate teaching qualification such as the Professional Master of Education (PME).
Many tutors begin by offering grinds informally in one or two Leaving Certificate subjects while studying at third level, building a client base through word of mouth or platforms such as Grinds.ie. With experience and a full qualification, you may expand into a broader range of subjects or year groups, or formalise your practice by joining a tuition agency or setting up a small tutoring business. Some tutors move into roles as Special Needs Assistants or Resource Teachers in mainstream schools, which typically requires additional qualifications recognised by the Department of Education. Others pursue postgraduate study such as the PME to qualify as fully registered classroom teachers, using their tutoring background as a strong foundation for professional teaching practice.
AI-powered learning platforms such as adaptive tutoring apps and AI chatbots can now provide instant explanations and practice questions on many standard curriculum topics, which puts some pressure on tutors offering basic drill-and-practice support. However, the human elements of tutoring — building rapport, identifying emotional barriers to learning, and providing the nuanced encouragement a struggling student needs — remain beyond the reach of current AI tools. Tutors who incorporate AI tools into their practice, for example using them to generate customised practice materials or track progress data, can make their sessions more efficient and targeted. The growing complexity of AI means students may also need support in developing digital literacy and critical thinking skills, opening new areas of tutoring demand.
