What does a Vehicle Cleaner do?

As a vehicle cleaner, you clean, wash, and polish the interior and exterior of cars, vans, trucks, and other vehicles to a high standard. Your daily tasks include vacuuming interiors, shampooing upholstery, washing and waxing bodywork, cleaning engines, and applying protective treatments to surfaces. You work with a range of chemical cleaning agents and specialist equipment, following health and safety procedures to handle these substances safely. Vehicle cleaners are employed at car dealerships, rental companies, fleet operators, and dedicated valeting businesses across Ireland, often working as part of a small team under a supervisor.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Vehicle Cleaner

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:15 a.m. and you are at the valeting bay by 8:00 a.m., signing in and pulling on your uniform — waterproof apron, rubber gloves, and steel-toecap boots. Your supervisor has already printed the job sheet for the day: six cars booked in for a full valet and three vehicles from a rental fleet that need a quick turnaround before collection at noon. You check the cleaning products stored in the chemical cabinet, making sure the lids are tight and the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) data sheets are visible on the wall beside them. By 8:30 a.m. you have the first car — a family SUV — up on the wash bay. You start outside, rinsing the bodywork with a pressure washer before applying a pH-neutral shampoo with a foam lance. Once you rinse that off, you move to the wheels, scrubbing brake dust from the alloys with a long-handled brush and a dedicated wheel cleaner. Your arms ache a little after the third set of wheels; it is more physical than people expect.

Required Education

No formal qualifications are required to work as a vehicle cleaner, making it one of the most accessible entry points into the workforce for school leavers. Many employers provide on-the-job training, teaching you the correct techniques for interior and exterior cleaning, engine cleaning, and the safe use of chemical agents. A Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate is helpful but not essential, and subjects such as Science can give you a basic understanding of the cleaning products you will use. Some candidates complete short QQI Level 4 or Level 5 courses in areas such as vehicle valeting or cleaning operations through their local Education and Training Board (ETB). There is no requirement for professional registration with a statutory body for this role. Safe Pass and manual handling certificates may be required by some employers, particularly in fleet or commercial settings.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most vehicle cleaners begin with on-the-job training and quickly build up speed and expertise across different types of vehicles. With experience, you can move into a senior valeter or team leader role, overseeing the work of newer colleagues and managing workflow at a dealership or valeting centre. Some experienced valeters set up their own mobile or premises-based valeting businesses, serving private customers, dealerships, and fleet companies. Further progression is possible into roles such as detailing specialist, fleet coordinator, or dealership preparation manager.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation have limited direct impact on vehicle cleaning, as the physical, hands-on nature of the work is difficult to replicate with current technology. Robotic car washes handle basic exterior washing in some settings, but detailed interior valeting and specialist cleaning remain firmly human tasks. AI-driven scheduling and fleet management software may streamline how valeting jobs are assigned and tracked, improving efficiency for employers. Overall, the core cleaning and detailing work is expected to remain a human-led occupation for the foreseeable future.
