As a Vehicle Glazier you repair and replace windscreens, side windows, rear glass and sunroofs across a range of motor vehicles, following manufacturer specifications regarding glass type, thickness, size and shape. You inspect damaged glass, prepare the affected area by removing broken panes and applying specialist primers and adhesives, then fit and seal the new glass to the required standard. Much of this work is carried out on-site at customers' homes or workplaces using a mobile service van, though you may also work from a fixed workshop within a motor dealership bodyshop or specialist glazing centre. You liaise with customers, insurance companies and vehicle manufacturers, and take responsibility for ensuring each repair or replacement meets both safety standards and the vehicle's original specification.
Listen: a day as a Vehicle Glazier
Your alarm goes off at 7:00 a.m. You are a vehicle glazier working for a windscreen repair and replacement company based in Naas, County Kildare. Before leaving home you check your job schedule on the company tablet — four jobs today spread across Kildare and south Dublin. You load the service van with the windscreens pre-selected by the depot the evening before, making sure the glass is secured in its protective rack, and you confirm your stock of urethane adhesive cartridges, primer bottles, suction cups, cold-knife tools and curing covers. Your first call is at 8:30 a.m. in Newbridge — a Ford Transit with a long stress crack running from the corner of the windscreen. You park safely off the road, photograph the damage for the insurance claim file, then use a cold knife and wire to cut away the old glass, working carefully to avoid damaging the paintwork around the aperture. You remove every trace of old rubber and adhesive with a scraper and solvent, then apply primer to the bonding surface and leave it to flash off for the specified time shown on the product data sheet.
There are no fixed Leaving Certificate subject requirements for this role, though subjects such as Engineering, Construction Studies, Applied Technology and Physics are useful preparation for working with materials and precision fitting. Entry is most commonly via on-the-job training with a specialist employer such as Autoglass, or through a QQI Level 5 programme in Vehicle Technology or a related motor trade discipline at a College of Further Education. Some Vehicle Glaziers complete a SOLAS-recognised apprenticeship in Vehicle Body Repair or a related motor trade pathway, which provides structured technical and workplace training. Manufacturers and glazing companies typically provide their own product-specific training covering adhesive systems, recalibration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and safety procedures. No formal statutory registration body governs this trade, but industry certifications from bodies such as the Glass Qualifications Authority (GQA) are recognised by Irish employers and enhance employability.
Most Vehicle Glaziers begin as trainee technicians with a specialist glazing company or motor dealership bodyshop, completing in-house training alongside experienced colleagues. With proven competence and product knowledge, you can progress to senior or lead technician level, taking on more complex jobs including vehicles with integrated ADAS cameras. Experienced technicians may move into supervisory or workshop management roles, or take on franchise or self-employed mobile glazing work. Further progression into technical training, quality assurance or fleet account management is also possible within larger national companies operating across Ireland.
AI is not expected to significantly reduce demand for Vehicle Glaziers in the near term, as the hands-on physical nature of glass removal and fitting is difficult to automate. However, AI-driven diagnostic tools are increasingly used to assess crack propagation and determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate, streamlining the assessment process. ADAS recalibration software guided by AI is becoming standard after windscreen replacement, meaning technicians must develop competence with these digital systems alongside their traditional craft skills. AI is also being used by insurers and fleet managers to process claims and schedule repair appointments more efficiently, changing some of the administrative aspects of the role.
