Biochemistry explores the chemical processes that underpin all living organisms, from enzyme function and protein structure to DNA replication and metabolic pathways. You will spend significant time in laboratories developing practical skills in techniques such as gel electrophoresis, PCR, spectrophotometry and cell culture. As the programme progresses, you can specialise in areas like molecular biology, structural biochemistry, immunology or biopharmaceutical science. A typical week combines lectures, tutorials and scheduled lab sessions, with some programmes offering a research placement or Erasmus exchange in third or fourth year. Graduates are well prepared for Ireland's thriving biopharma and life sciences industry, as well as academic research.
Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects, including English and Irish at Ordinary level or above. Higher-level Chemistry is strongly recommended and in some cases required, while Higher-level Biology and Mathematics are also highly valued. CAO points for Biochemistry at UCC, UCD and University of Galway are generally competitive to high, reflecting strong demand for places. If you do not meet the direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award in Applied Science or Laboratory Science can provide a recognised progression route into Level 8 programmes. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature entry scheme, and HEAR and DARE access routes are available for eligible students.
Graduate prospects in biochemistry are strong in Ireland, driven by continuous investment in the biopharma and medical devices sectors, which employ over 50,000 people nationally. Demand for laboratory scientists, quality assurance professionals and regulatory specialists remains consistently high. Entry-level salaries in industry typically range from approximately €28,000 to €38,000 gross per year, rising considerably with experience and postgraduate qualifications. Ireland's position as a European hub for multinational pharmaceutical companies means that well-qualified biochemists have access to a wide range of career pathways.
Artificial intelligence is transforming biochemistry research, particularly in protein structure prediction, drug discovery and the analysis of large-scale genomic and proteomic datasets. Tools such as AlphaFold have already reshaped how researchers approach protein modelling, and AI-assisted laboratory automation is increasingly common in industrial biopharma settings. As a biochemistry student and graduate, you will be expected to develop familiarity with computational tools and bioinformatics alongside traditional wet-lab skills. Rather than replacing biochemists, AI is expanding the scope and speed of research, making data literacy an increasingly important part of the profession.

How to apply
Apply through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February for standard entry; some institutions offer a broad science entry route in first year with progression to Biochemistry thereafter. Mature applicants and those with FETAC/QQI Level 5/6 awards may apply via the CAO using alternative entry schemes.
