A BSc in Chemistry gives you a rigorous grounding in the fundamental principles of matter, energy and chemical reactions. You study analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, developing both theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory skills. Practical lab sessions typically take up a significant portion of your week alongside lectures and tutorials, and in later years you carry out an independent research project. Many programmes offer an optional placement year in industry — often in pharmaceutical, agrochemical or biotechnology companies — and some universities facilitate Erasmus exchanges across Europe. By graduation you are comfortable with techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography and synthetic chemistry, and you understand how these underpin quality control and research in Irish industry.
Entry is through the CAO, and points requirements are typically moderate to high, reflecting strong demand for science places at Irish universities. You will generally need to meet the minimum entry requirements of the National University of Ireland or the individual university, which usually include at least six subjects in the Leaving Certificate including English and Irish at Ordinary level or above. Higher-level Maths and at least one science subject — Chemistry or Physics — are strongly advised and may be required by certain institutions. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC awards in Science or Laboratory Science can provide a progression route onto the degree for applicants without traditional Leaving Certificate grades. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature applicant process, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at most universities for eligible applicants.
Ireland's pharmaceutical and biopharma industry is one of the largest employers of chemistry graduates in Europe, making job prospects generally strong for well-qualified graduates. Demand for analytical and QC chemists in particular remains consistently high as multinational companies maintain major manufacturing operations in Ireland. Salaries for entry-level analytical or QC roles typically range from around €28,000 to €38,000 gross per annum, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. Postgraduate study or a professional placement year can significantly strengthen your employability and earning potential.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in chemistry for tasks such as predicting molecular properties, accelerating drug discovery and optimising synthetic routes, meaning you will need some familiarity with data analysis and machine-learning tools during your studies. Routine analytical tasks and spectral interpretation are being supported by AI-assisted software, but the core laboratory skills and scientific judgement of a trained chemist remain essential. AI is more likely to augment your role than replace it, particularly in research and quality assurance settings. Graduates who combine strong chemistry knowledge with computational literacy will be well positioned in an evolving job market.

How to apply
Undergraduate Chemistry degrees in Ireland are accessed through the CAO (Central Applications Office) at cao.ie, with applications typically opening in November and the normal closing date in February. Leaving Certificate applicants should note that Higher Level Maths and Chemistry (or Science) are commonly required or strongly recommended subjects.
