The Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych) is an intensive three-year professional training programme that equips you with advanced skills in psychological assessment, formulation, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions across the lifespan. You will study models such as cognitive behavioural therapy, systemic therapy, and neuropsychology, applying them across adult mental health, child and adolescent, older adult, and learning disability services. A typical week balances academic seminars and research supervision with supervised clinical placements in HSE-funded settings around Ireland. You will complete a doctoral-level research thesis alongside your clinical work. Placements rotate across different specialisms, giving you broad exposure to the realities of publicly funded mental health care in Ireland.

Pursuing a Career in Clinical Neuropsychology
Entry requires a primary Honours Bachelor degree (NFQ Level 8) in psychology that is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), typically with a first-class or upper second-class result. Candidates are also expected to hold a postgraduate qualification at Level 9 (e.g. an MSc in Psychology or a related field) in many cases, though this varies by programme. Substantial relevant experience working in mental health, intellectual disability, or related health and social care settings is essential and strongly weighted in shortlisting. Competition for HSE-funded places is extremely high, and most successful applicants have several years of post-graduate paid clinical experience as an Assistant Psychologist. There is no CAO route at this level; applications are made directly to the university programmes and coordinated through a national selection process linked to HSE funding. Mature applicants and those with diverse clinical backgrounds are welcomed, provided PSI-accredited degree requirements are met.
Demand for qualified Clinical Psychologists in Ireland significantly outstrips supply, and the HSE has consistently sought to expand its psychology workforce as part of mental health service development. Newly qualified graduates can expect relatively secure employment prospects, particularly within the public health system, though competition for higher-grade posts increases with seniority. The ongoing implementation of national mental health policy frameworks sustains long-term workforce demand. Salaries in the HSE for a staff-grade Clinical Psychologist typically start in the range of €55,000–€70,000 gross per annum, rising considerably at Senior and Principal grades.
AI tools are beginning to assist in psychological assessment through automated scoring, data-driven risk screening, and digital mental health interventions such as AI-supported CBT apps. You will need to critically evaluate these technologies for clinical validity, ethical application, and equity of access across diverse Irish populations. The relational, empathic, and formulation-based core of clinical psychology practice means the profession is considered less susceptible to automation than many other healthcare roles. Nevertheless, familiarity with digital therapeutics and data ethics is becoming an expected part of professional competence.

How to apply
The DClinPsych is a highly competitive, HSE-funded doctoral programme; applicants apply directly to the Doctoral Consortium (comprising TCD, UCD, UL and University of Galway) through a centralised application process, typically requiring an upper second-class honours degree in Psychology, Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) eligibility, and substantial relevant clinical experience. There is no CAO involvement; shortlisted candidates proceed to structured interviews coordinated nationally each year.
