What will you learn?

Digital Humanities combines traditional humanities scholarship with digital tools and methods, giving you skills in both critical analysis and technical practice. You study literature, history, or cultural studies alongside programming fundamentals, data visualisation, and the management of digital archives and collections. A typical week might involve a seminar on archival theory in the morning, followed by a lab session building a digital edition of a historical text or analysing datasets with Python. Many programmes include a placement with a cultural institution such as a national library, museum, or digital heritage project, and some offer Erasmus exchange opportunities with European humanities research centres. You graduate with a distinctive combination of interpretive and technical competencies.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English, which is essential for humanities study. Irish at Higher or Ordinary level is usually required, and Higher-level Maths or a quantitative subject can strengthen your application. CAO points are generally moderate, though this varies by institution and the specific programme strand. Students with a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET qualification in humanities, media, or computing may be eligible to apply through a dedicated QQI/FET progression route. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply directly and are assessed on motivation and relevant experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at both UCC and Maynooth University for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

The graduate outlook is reasonably positive, particularly as cultural institutions and universities invest in digitisation and open-access research infrastructure. Demand for professionals who can bridge humanistic thinking and digital practice is growing in areas such as digital preservation, UX content design, and research data management. Salaries at entry level in the cultural and heritage sector typically range from approximately €28,000 to €35,000 gross per annum, with senior or research-focused roles reaching €45,000 to €60,000 or more. Graduates who supplement their degree with further technical skills or postgraduate study tend to access broader career pathways.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is transforming Digital Humanities in ways that are both enabling and intellectually challenging for practitioners. Tools such as large language models and machine learning pipelines are increasingly used for tasks like handwritten text recognition, corpus analysis, and automated metadata generation in archives. As a student in this field, you will engage critically with these tools rather than simply use them, evaluating their outputs for bias, accuracy, and ethical implications. This critical-technical literacy is precisely what makes Digital Humanities graduates valuable as AI becomes embedded in cultural and research infrastructure.

How to apply

Applications for undergraduate BA (Hons) programmes in Digital Humanities are made through the CAO (Central Applications Office) at cao.ie, with offers based on Leaving Certificate points. Not all providers offer a standalone Digital Humanities degree; some deliver it as a joint honours or pathway within Arts programmes, so applicants should check individual course structures carefully on each institution's prospectus.
