This course gives you a thorough grounding in the practical and business aspects of running a beef and sheep enterprise in Ireland. You will study grassland management, animal nutrition, breeding selection using the Beef and Sheep Ireland indexes, and flock and herd health planning. Practical weeks on the college farm or at off-site placements let you handle livestock, operate farm machinery, carry out grassland budgeting and use EID tagging and herd management software. You will also cover farm business planning, financial record-keeping and environmental compliance under GAEC and Nitrates regulations. A typical week combines morning practical sessions with afternoon classroom modules, giving you a balance of hands-on experience and technical knowledge.
Entry is typically based on a Leaving Certificate or a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture. For direct Leaving Certificate entry, most Teagasc colleges look for a pass in at least five subjects including English and Maths, though Higher-level Biology or Agricultural Science is a strong advantage. Applicants who hold a QQI Level 5 Major Award in Agriculture can progress directly without points competition. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may be considered on the basis of relevant farming experience and an interview. Some colleges also accept applicants who have completed a Green Cert foundation year. Relevant farm work experience strengthens any application significantly.
Demand for skilled drystock managers remains steady in Ireland, where beef and sheep farming are central to the rural economy and agri-food export sector. Teagasc and private advisory bodies regularly seek qualified technicians, and the push towards profitable and sustainable farming systems increases the value of formally qualified farm managers. Graduates who combine this qualification with business acumen are well placed to access TAMS and other Department of Agriculture grant schemes. Continuing professional development through Teagasc events and Bord Bia quality assurance programmes supports long-term career growth.
AI and precision livestock technology are beginning to influence drystock farming in Ireland, with tools such as automatic weighing systems, EID-linked herd management platforms and predictive health-monitoring software becoming more common on commercial farms. Grassland budgeting apps and decision-support tools developed by Teagasc already use data-driven models to guide grazing management. While physical stockmanship and land management skills remain irreplaceable, graduates who can interpret farm data and work with digital platforms will have a clear competitive advantage. AI is likely to assist rather than replace the farm manager role in the medium term.

How to apply
Applications are made directly to Teagasc Agricultural Colleges via the Teagasc online application portal (not through the CAO); applicants typically require a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture or equivalent, and some practical farming experience is desirable. Entry requirements and available places are confirmed annually by each college, so prospective students should contact their chosen college directly.
