The BA in Applied Policing is a work-based degree delivered through the Garda College in Templemore, accredited by the University of Limerick. During Phase I you live and train on campus, studying law, criminology, policing ethics, and practical Garda skills including driver training, public order, and investigation techniques. A typical week blends classroom lectures, scenario-based exercises, physical training, and community engagement modules. After attestation you are deployed as a Garda while completing the remaining phases of the degree on duty, combining real operational experience with academic study. The programme is paid throughout, and you graduate as both a qualified member of An Garda Síochána and a UL degree holder.

Garda Training
Entry is through the An Garda Síochána recruitment competition run by the Public Appointments Service (PAS), which typically requires a minimum Leaving Certificate with a grade of O6/H7 or better in six subjects, including English or Irish. Irish language competency is assessed as part of the selection process. Candidates must also pass fitness tests, a medical examination, vetting, and a competitive interview process; there are no CAO points as such — selection is based on the overall competition outcome. Mature applicants (23 years or older on 1 January of the recruitment year) may apply under standard competition rules. There is no specific QQI/FET route, though holding a prior degree or FET award may be advantageous at interview stage.
Demand for Garda recruits in Ireland has been consistently strong, with government commitments to increasing Garda numbers driving regular recruitment competitions. Job security is high, as employment is permanent and pensionable under the public service. Salary progression follows the Garda pay scale set under national public service agreements, starting at approximately €32,000–€35,000 as a trainee and rising to €60,000+ at Garda rank maximum, with further increases on promotion. The structured career pathway and wide range of specialist units offer strong long-term prospects.
AI and data analytics are increasingly used within An Garda Síochána for crime pattern analysis, intelligence-led policing, and digital forensics, meaning graduates benefit from digital literacy skills. Predictive policing tools and automated number-plate recognition (ANPR) systems are part of modern operational policing, and trainees are introduced to these technologies during training. However, the core functions of community engagement, use of discretion, safeguarding vulnerable people, and public order response remain firmly human-centred and cannot be automated. AI is best understood as a support tool that enhances, rather than replaces, frontline Garda work.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
This programme is not applied for through the CAO. Entry is exclusively through An Garda Síochána's own competitive recruitment process, run by the Public Appointments Service (publicjobs.ie), which includes an online application, competency assessments, physical fitness tests, interview and vetting; successful candidates are appointed as Garda Trainees and complete the BA in Applied Policing at Garda College, Templemore, with the degree awarded by University of Limerick.
