A degree in Government and Public Policy introduces you to how political systems work, how public decisions are made, and how policy is designed, implemented, and evaluated. You will study Irish and comparative politics, public administration, policy analysis, research methods, and political theory. Practical elements often include placements with government departments, local authorities, or NGOs, as well as opportunities to engage with think-tanks or European institutions through Erasmus+ exchanges. A typical week combines lectures, small-group seminars, and independent research, with assessments ranging from policy briefs and case studies to essays and presentations. The course suits students who are curious about current affairs, governance, and social change.
Entry is typically through the CAO with a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects, including English at Ordinary level or above. Points requirements for this course at UCC, Maynooth, or DCU are generally moderate to high, reflecting consistent demand. Subjects such as History, Politics & Society, Economics, Geography, or a language are advantageous, though no single subject is usually compulsory beyond English. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through separate mature-student CAO pathways, with decisions often based on interview and personal statement. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Social Science, Public Administration, or a related area can provide a recognised progression route into Level 8 programmes. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at all three institutions for eligible applicants.
Graduate demand for people with policy and public administration skills remains steady in Ireland, driven by ongoing public sector recruitment and the growing complexity of policy challenges such as housing, climate action, and healthcare reform. The Irish Civil Service runs structured graduate recruitment programmes, offering clear career progression for new entrants. Salaries for entry-level Civil Service grades typically range from approximately €32,000 to €42,000 gross per annum, rising significantly with seniority or specialist expertise. Graduates who develop strong quantitative and research skills tend to find the widest range of opportunities across both public and private sectors.
AI tools are beginning to change how policy research and analysis are conducted, with machine learning used to process large datasets, model policy outcomes, and track public opinion at scale. As a student and future professional, you will increasingly be expected to understand data literacy and digital governance alongside traditional political analysis. AI also raises important regulatory and ethical questions around algorithmic decision-making in public services, which are becoming core policy issues in themselves. Rather than replacing policy roles, AI is reshaping them, placing greater value on critical thinking, ethical judgement, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly.
