What will you learn?

This course prepares you to manage the day-to-day operations of healthcare settings such as GP practices, primary care centres, dental clinics, and community health facilities. You will study healthcare administration, financial management, human resources, and Irish health legislation, including GDPR as it applies to patient records and data. Practical modules cover HSE service agreements, procurement, and quality assurance frameworks used in Irish health services. A typical week combines classroom-based business and law modules with case studies drawn from real Irish clinical environments. Work placements in GP practices or HSE-funded facilities are a central feature, giving you direct exposure to reception management, staff scheduling, budgeting, and patient communication systems.

Required Education

Entry to a Level 7 Bachelor programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of five O6/H7 grades, including English. Subjects such as Business, Accounting, and Biology are useful but not always compulsory. CAO points requirements for this programme are generally moderate, making it accessible to a wide range of applicants. Many students enter via a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 Healthcare Administration or Business PLC award, which can provide a direct progression route without CAO points. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to ATU and participating colleges, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible students. Some Colleges of Further Education deliver the Level 6 award as a standalone qualification through their ETB network.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled practice managers in Ireland is steady, driven by ongoing investment in primary care infrastructure under Sláintecare and the expansion of GP services under new HSE contracts. Smaller GP practices increasingly require professionally qualified managers as the administrative burden of GDPR compliance, payroll, and HSE reporting grows. Graduates with a Level 7 qualification are well placed for supervisory and management roles, and many progress to Level 8 or Level 9 programmes in healthcare management or business to advance further. Job opportunities are available throughout Ireland, including in rural areas where primary care networks are being developed.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven practice management software is already automating appointment scheduling, billing reconciliation, and patient recall systems in Irish GP practices. You will need to understand how to evaluate, implement, and oversee these tools while ensuring compliance with GDPR and HSE data governance requirements. AI is unlikely to replace the judgement and interpersonal skills required to manage staff, handle patient complaints, or negotiate with HSE contract managers. Graduates who are comfortable working alongside digital health tools will have a clear advantage in the job market.

How to apply

Many Healthcare Practice Management programmes at certificate or degree level in Ireland are offered as part-time or blended learning programmes applied for directly through the institution or via FETAC/QQI-linked ETB colleges using fetchcourses.ie; some full-time undergraduate offerings may be accessed through the CAO. Applicants typically need a QQI Level 5 award in a health or business-related field, or equivalent Leaving Certificate results, with work experience in a healthcare setting often advantageous.
