What will you learn?

A degree in Hospitality Management prepares you to lead operations across hotels, restaurants, events venues, and tourism enterprises. You study a blend of business management, food and beverage operations, accommodation services, marketing, and financial management tailored to the hospitality industry. Practical skills are central from the outset, with lab-based kitchens, front-office simulations, and industry-linked projects featuring throughout your studies. A paid placement year, typically in your third year, places you in a hotel, resort, or catering company in Ireland or abroad, often supported by Erasmus+ partnerships in Europe. A typical week combines lectures, group project work, operational practicals, and guest industry seminars, giving you both theoretical grounding and real-world confidence.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects including English and Maths at Ordinary level or above. Points requirements are generally moderate, though places at TU Dublin and MTU campuses in popular cities can be competitive. Subjects such as Business, Home Economics, and languages are advantageous but rarely mandatory. If you do not meet direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Hospitality, Catering, or Tourism provides a well-established progression route onto the degree with a reduced points threshold. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature pathway, and HEAR and DARE schemes support access for eligible students from under-represented backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Ireland's hospitality and tourism sector continues to recover and grow following pandemic disruption, with Fáilte Ireland consistently highlighting skills shortages at supervisory and management levels. Graduates with a degree-level qualification and practical placement experience are in strong demand, particularly in Dublin, Cork, Galway, and major tourist regions. Starting salaries for graduate management trainees typically range from approximately €28,000 to €35,000, rising significantly with experience and seniority. Progression to general manager or director level in hotels or restaurant groups can bring earnings of €55,000 to €80,000 or more, depending on the scale of the operation.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is increasingly shaping hospitality operations through automated revenue management systems, AI-powered guest personalisation, and chatbot-driven customer service, all of which you will encounter in your studies. Tools that predict booking patterns and optimise room pricing are now standard in mid-to-large hotel groups, so understanding data-driven decision-making is becoming a core graduate skill. However, hospitality is fundamentally a people-centred industry, and the human touch in guest experience, leadership, and service recovery remains irreplaceable by automation. Your degree will help you work alongside these technologies rather than be displaced by them.
