This course teaches you how to design, manage and secure the IT infrastructure that organisations depend on every day. You study operating systems — principally Windows Server and Linux — alongside networking fundamentals, cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, and cybersecurity principles. Practical labs form a large part of your week, where you configure servers, set up virtual machines and troubleshoot network faults. Many programmes include a work placement semester in an Irish or European company, and some modules are aligned to industry certifications from Microsoft and Cisco. By graduation you are comfortable managing real enterprise environments rather than just studying them in theory.
Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate including at least six subjects, with passes in English and Mathematics generally required; Higher Level Maths is advantageous and some programmes specify an O4/H6 minimum in Maths. CAO points for these programmes tend to be moderate, reflecting steady but not extreme demand. If you do not meet the Leaving Certificate requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in IT, Computing or Networking offers a well-established progression route into first or second year. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to the institution and are assessed on relevant work or life experience. HEAR and DARE schemes provide reduced-points access for eligible applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.
Demand for ICT systems and infrastructure professionals in Ireland remains strong, driven by ongoing cloud migration, data centre expansion and cybersecurity investment. The tech sector continues to be one of Ireland's largest employers, and systems administration skills are needed across virtually every industry, offering good job security. Graduate starting salaries typically range from approximately €30,000 to €40,000, with experienced administrators and cloud specialists earning €50,000 or more. Opportunities exist to move into specialised roles in cloud architecture, DevOps, or cybersecurity with further experience and certifications.
AI-powered monitoring and automation tools are increasingly handling routine tasks such as patch management, log analysis and performance alerts, changing the day-to-day work of systems administrators. You will need to develop skills in working alongside these tools rather than performing every task manually, and an understanding of AI-driven security platforms is becoming expected. However, the hands-on, problem-solving nature of infrastructure management means human judgement remains essential, particularly for complex fault diagnosis and system design. Overall, AI is reshaping the role rather than replacing it, and courses are beginning to introduce AI operations (AIOps) concepts.
