This course trains you in the skills needed to work safely and effectively as a lifeguard and swimming instructor in Ireland. You study water rescue techniques, pool and open-water surveillance, casualty management, and first aid. Practical sessions in a pool are central to your week, with assessed water rescues, spinal management drills, and teaching practice with beginner swimmers. You also cover child safeguarding, communication skills, and leisure-centre operations. Awards from Irish Water Safety (IWS) and Swim Ireland are embedded in the programme, giving you nationally recognised qualifications alongside your QQI components. Many students complete a work placement in a local leisure centre or with an aquatics club.
Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied, with most ETB colleges asking for a minimum of five passes including English. No specific Higher-level subjects are required, though Physical Education or Biology is an advantage. You must be a competent swimmer and will normally complete a swim-fitness assessment before being accepted onto the course. QQI Level 4 or a relevant Swim Ireland / IWS junior award can also serve as a stepping stone. Mature applicants (23 and over) may apply directly to the college without meeting the standard Leaving Certificate requirements. HEAR and DARE access routes may be available through the ETB admissions process.
Demand for qualified lifeguards and swim teachers in Ireland remains consistently strong, driven by growing participation in aquatic sport and mandatory pool-safety staffing ratios. Many graduates move quickly into part-time or full-time employment because IWS and Swim Ireland awards are a direct employment requirement rather than simply desirable. Career progression is achievable with experience, with senior lifeguard, duty manager, and aquatics development roles open to those who build on their qualifications. Gross salaries for qualified swim teachers and lifeguards typically range from around €26,000 to €35,000 annually, with supervisory roles earning more.
AI currently has limited direct impact on day-to-day lifeguarding and swim teaching, where human judgement, physical response, and personal communication remain essential. Some leisure centres are beginning to trial AI-assisted pool surveillance camera systems that can flag potential drowning incidents, but these are designed to support rather than replace qualified lifeguards. Administrative tasks such as lesson scheduling, attendance tracking, and parent communications may increasingly be assisted by software tools. The hands-on, safety-critical nature of this work means job displacement by AI is considered low in the foreseeable future.

How to apply
These courses are delivered at FET level through ETB Colleges of Further Education nationwide and through awarding bodies Irish Water Safety (IWS) and Swim Ireland; applicants apply directly to the relevant ETB centre, local leisure facility, or via the IWS/Swim Ireland websites rather than through the CAO. Entry requirements typically include a minimum swimming competency test and a minimum age (usually 16–17), with no formal academic entry points applied.
