A Mathematical Sciences degree gives you a broad, rigorous grounding in both pure and applied mathematics, alongside substantial computing and statistics modules. You will explore areas such as real analysis, abstract algebra, differential equations, probability theory, and numerical methods, while developing strong programming skills in languages like Python, R, or MATLAB. Many programmes allow you to specialise in later years towards actuarial mathematics, data science, financial mathematics, or theoretical research. A typical week combines lectures, problem-solving tutorials, and computer lab sessions where you put mathematical theory into practice. Some programmes offer study abroad semesters through Erasmus+ partnerships, and final-year projects often involve original mathematical investigation or applied data analysis.
Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects including English and Mathematics. Higher Level Mathematics is almost always essential and a strong grade is expected; CAO points for this programme are generally competitive to highly competitive depending on the institution. Higher Level subjects in Physics or Applied Mathematics are advantageous but not always mandatory. Students without the required Leaving Cert results may enter through a QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC course in Science or Computing and apply for advanced entry or progression. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply directly to institutions and are assessed on experience and aptitude; HEAR and DARE access routes are also available for eligible applicants.
Demand for graduates with strong quantitative and analytical skills remains high in Ireland, particularly in the growing fintech, data, and insurance sectors. Mathematical Sciences graduates are regarded as versatile, and unemployment rates among graduates are consistently low. The actuarial profession in particular offers a structured, well-paid career path, with salaries for qualified actuaries typically ranging from around €70,000 to over €120,000 gross per year. Entry-level roles in data analysis or software typically start in the €32,000–€45,000 range.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly intertwined with mathematical sciences, as the statistical and computational foundations of AI sit directly within this field. Graduates with strong probability, linear algebra, and programming skills are well positioned to work in AI development and research rather than being displaced by it. Routine computation and symbolic manipulation are increasingly handled by tools like Wolfram Alpha or AI assistants, shifting emphasis onto higher-order problem formulation and interpretation. This makes deep mathematical understanding more valuable, not less, as AI tools become widespread.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
CAO points (indicative): 280-510 (2024)
* Indicative only: CAO points change every year. Always check the current points on cao.ie and with the institution.
How to apply
Apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) at cao.ie by 1 February (normal closing date) for undergraduate entry; Leaving Certificate results in August determine whether you meet the points requirement for your chosen course.
