What will you learn?

A degree in Photography gives you a thorough grounding in both the technical and creative dimensions of the medium, covering camera craft, lighting, digital post-production, darkroom techniques and visual storytelling. You will explore commercial, editorial, documentary and fine-art photography, developing a strong personal voice alongside professional skills. Practical studio sessions and location shoots form the backbone of most weeks, supported by art history and critical theory lectures that deepen your visual literacy. Many programmes include live briefs set by industry clients, and some offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in European art schools. By graduation you will have a professional-standard portfolio that is central to finding work in the industry.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate, and most programmes require at least six subjects including English, with some institutions specifying a minimum grade in English at Ordinary or Higher level. A prior background in Art & Design, Photography or Media Studies at Leaving Cert is advantageous but rarely mandatory. CAO points required are generally moderate, though competition for places at IADT can be higher due to the college's strong reputation. A portfolio of creative work or an interview is frequently required as part of the selection process at IADT and some other institutions. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 awards in Photography, Creative Media or Art & Design from a PLC college provide a recognised progression route. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over), as well as those accessing courses through HEAR or DARE, may be considered outside the standard CAO points process.

Career Prospects

The Irish creative and media industries continue to generate demand for skilled photographers, particularly in commercial, corporate and digital content sectors. Freelance and self-employment are the norm for many graduates, so building a strong client base and diversifying across several markets is typically necessary for sustainable income. Starting salaries in employed roles tend to be modest, often in the €24,000–€32,000 range, rising with experience and specialist reputation. Photographers with strong commercial portfolios and business acumen generally find more consistent work, while those pursuing fine-art or documentary paths often supplement income through teaching or commissions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-powered image generation and editing tools are already reshaping parts of the commercial photography industry, particularly in stock imagery and certain advertising contexts. However, skilled photographers who can work with clients directly, capture authentic moments and bring a distinctive creative vision remain highly valued and difficult to replace. You will be expected during your studies to engage critically with AI tools in post-production workflows, understanding both their capabilities and limitations. The long-term effect on the profession is still evolving, making adaptability and a strong personal style increasingly important for graduates.
