A pipefitting apprenticeship trains you to install, maintain and modify piping systems that carry gases, liquids and steam across industrial facilities such as pharmaceutical plants, data centres, utilities and manufacturing sites. You will develop skills in reading engineering drawings and specifications, selecting appropriate pipe materials, cutting, threading and joining pipe sections, and pressure-testing completed systems. Welding — including MIG, TIG and arc processes — is a significant element of the programme, as is working safely with pressurised systems. Your training alternates between on-the-job learning with your employer and off-the-job block-release phases at a SOLAS-approved training centre. A typical week on site involves working within a skilled trades team, following technical drawings, fitting pipe runs and attending safety briefings.
Entry to a pipefitting apprenticeship requires you to be employed by an approved SOLAS employer who registers you with Generation Apprenticeship. You will generally need to have completed the Leaving Certificate or a QQI Level 5 qualification, and employers typically look for passes in Maths, Technical Drawing or Engineering, though exact requirements vary by employer. Good numeracy is important, as you will be calculating pipe dimensions, gradients and pressures on a daily basis. Some employers accept candidates who are 16 or older with a Junior Cycle award and relevant aptitude, subject to SOLAS guidelines. Mature applicants and those coming from related trade backgrounds are also considered, and prior learning from relevant QQI courses may be recognised.
The outlook for qualified pipefitters in Ireland is very strong, driven by sustained investment in pharma facilities, data centre construction and national infrastructure upgrades. Skilled trades across the mechanical services sector are consistently listed among areas of critical skills shortage by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs. Gross annual salaries for qualified pipefitters typically range from approximately €45,000 to €65,000, with experienced or supervisory roles earning more, particularly on large pharma or data centre projects. Overtime and shift premiums can increase earnings considerably on major capital projects.
AI and digital tools are beginning to influence pipefitting through Building Information Modelling (BIM) software, which generates highly detailed 3D piping layouts that tradespeople must read and work from on site. Automated pipe-cutting and prefabrication machinery is becoming more common in off-site fabrication shops, increasing precision and reducing rework. However, the hands-on installation, pressure-testing and welding work in complex industrial environments requires skilled human judgement and dexterity that cannot currently be automated. AI is therefore more likely to change how pipefitters prepare and plan their work than to displace the trade itself in the foreseeable future.

How to apply
The Pipefitting Apprenticeship is an employer-led programme registered with SOLAS; applicants must first secure employment with a SOLAS-registered employer who then registers them as an apprentice. Off-the-job training (phases) is delivered at designated ETB training centres across Ireland, and no CAO application is required.
