What will you learn?

The Professional Master of Education (Primary) is a two-year postgraduate programme that prepares you to become a qualified primary school teacher in Ireland. You study curriculum theory, child development, pedagogy, and the teaching of all primary school subjects, with a strong emphasis on the Irish language and Gaeilge-medium instruction. A significant portion of each year is spent on school placement, where you teach across different class levels under the supervision of experienced teachers. You also explore inclusive education, special educational needs, digital learning, and wellbeing. A typical week balances on-campus lectures and tutorials with lesson planning, placement preparation, and independent study.

Required Education

To enter the PME (Primary), you must hold an undergraduate degree at NFQ Level 8 (minimum second-class honours in most cases) from a recognised institution. A Higher-level Leaving Certificate pass in Irish is an absolute requirement, as you will be expected to teach through Irish; some providers may also require a competency test in Irish. You will typically need to demonstrate a broad academic background, and prior experience working with children is strongly recommended. Mature applicants may apply through a dedicated mature-entry route and are assessed holistically. HEAR and DARE access schemes may be available through the CAO postgraduate pathways at participating institutions. Places are limited and competition is strong, so a good honours degree result significantly improves your chances.

Career Prospects

Demand for registered primary teachers in Ireland remains solid, with ongoing recruitment driven by demographic growth, high levels of teacher mobility, and retirement of experienced staff. Newly qualified teachers are typically placed on the Droichead induction programme in their first year of teaching. Urban and suburban areas can be more competitive for permanent posts, while positions in rural areas and Gaelscoileanna are often easier to secure given the demand for fluent Irish speakers. Salary scales are set nationally and progress incrementally, offering long-term stability.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to influence how primary teachers plan lessons, differentiate instruction, and generate classroom resources, and the PME increasingly prepares you to use these tools critically and responsibly. However, the fundamentally human, relational nature of teaching young children means AI is unlikely to replace teachers in any meaningful way at primary level. You will be encouraged to think carefully about digital ethics and age-appropriate technology use in the classroom. Overall, AI is expected to act as a support tool rather than a disruptive force in this profession.

How to apply

The PME (Primary) is a two-year postgraduate initial teacher education programme; applicants apply directly to each institution (not through the CAO), typically requiring a Level 8 degree with a minimum 2.2 honours grade and competency in Irish. Admission is competitive and includes an interview process, with places allocated by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) quota system.
