This programme trains you in the safe erection, alteration, and dismantling of complex scaffolding structures on large construction and industrial sites across Ireland. You study advanced tube-and-fitting systems, modular and system scaffolding, loading calculations, and risk assessment for challenging environments such as refineries, power stations, and large civil projects. A typical week combines classroom-based theory on structural principles and CSCS standards with extensive practical yard work erecting real scaffolding configurations under qualified instruction. You develop skills in working at height safely, reading engineering drawings, and managing materials on site. Industrial placements on live projects give you direct experience of the fast-paced demands of commercial construction and shutdown maintenance work.
Entry is typically available to those who hold a Junior Certificate or equivalent and have some prior construction site experience, though mature applicants with relevant on-site background are also welcomed. A CSCS Basic Scaffolding Card or completion of a recognised introductory scaffolding programme is generally required before progressing to Advanced level training. Good literacy and numeracy are important for reading load tables, site drawings, and safety documentation. ETBs and SOLAS-approved training centres deliver this programme nationally; your employer may sponsor your place as part of a workplace development pathway. SAFE Pass certification and a Manual Handling certificate are normally prerequisites before you begin practical site-based modules.
Demand for qualified scaffolders in Ireland remains consistently strong, driven by large-scale infrastructure investment under Project Ireland 2040, ongoing data centre construction, and the expanding offshore wind and renewable energy sector. Experienced scaffolders with an Advanced CSCS card command significantly higher day rates than general operatives, with gross annual earnings typically ranging from €40,000 to €65,000 depending on experience, overtime, and project type. Shutdown and specialist industrial work can push earnings considerably higher for those willing to travel. The relatively small number of fully certified Advanced Scaffolders in Ireland means the card carries real labour-market value.
AI has limited direct impact on the hands-on, physical nature of scaffolding work itself, which requires skilled human judgement on live sites. However, AI-assisted design tools and digital load-calculation software are increasingly used by scaffold planners and supervisors to model complex structures before erection begins. Drone inspection technology, sometimes supported by AI image analysis, is beginning to supplement manual scaffold inspections on large industrial sites. These tools complement rather than replace the skilled scaffolder, making digital literacy a growing asset for those moving into supervisory roles.

How to apply
Scaffolding CSCS Advanced training in Ireland is accessed either through an employer-led SOLAS apprenticeship (registered via Generation Apprenticeship with a participating employer) or by applying directly to your local ETB/FET centre, which delivers scaffolding skills programmes leading to CSCS card certification. There is no CAO application route for this level.
