What will you learn?

A Bachelor of Social Science gives you a grounding in how societies function, how policies are made, and how individuals and communities behave. You study sociology, social policy, psychology, and political science, often building your own combination of modules as the degree progresses. Practical fieldwork placements in community organisations, NGOs, or public-sector bodies are a central feature, giving you real-world exposure alongside your academic study. Many programmes include an option to spend a semester abroad through the Erasmus+ scheme. A typical week might involve lectures on social inequality, a small-group seminar discussing Irish housing policy, independent research reading, and attendance at a placement in a social-care setting.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English at Ordinary level or above. Points demands are generally moderate to high depending on the institution, with UCD and UCC being competitive. While there is no strict Higher-level Maths requirement for most BSocSc programmes, Higher-level English and subjects such as Geography, History, or SPHE are considered useful preparation. Students holding a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award, such as in Community Care or Social Studies, may apply through designated FET progression places. Mature applicants aged 23 or over can apply through the mature student entry route, and those facing socioeconomic disadvantage or disability may apply under the HEAR and DARE schemes respectively.

Career Prospects

Demand for graduates with social science skills remains steady in Ireland, particularly in the community and voluntary sector and within public services under pressure from housing, homelessness, and mental-health challenges. Those who progress to CORU-accredited social work qualifications are in strong demand, with the HSE and Tusla actively recruiting. Entry-level community and youth work roles typically offer salaries in the region of €28,000–€36,000 gross per year, while qualified social workers on HSE pay scales can expect €45,000–€65,000 with experience. Policy and research roles in think-tanks, government departments, and international bodies offer further career progression.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to assist social researchers in analysing large datasets, identifying patterns in social-care referrals, and automating elements of policy literature reviews. However, the core of social science work involves human judgement, relationship-building, and ethical decision-making that AI cannot replicate. Students are increasingly expected to understand data literacy and critically evaluate algorithmic approaches to social problems such as welfare allocation or child protection risk assessment. Overall, AI is likely to augment rather than replace roles in this field.
