What will you learn?

Technology Management sits at the crossroads of business and information technology, equipping you with the skills to plan, implement and oversee digital systems within organisations. You study project management, data analytics, business process improvement and digital strategy without needing to become a software developer. Practical modules are grounded in real organisational problems, and most programmes include a work placement semester where you gain hands-on experience in a company's IT or operations function. A typical week might involve a case-study workshop on digital transformation, a lab session analysing business data in tools like Power BI or Tableau, and a group project meeting focused on a technology change initiative. Some programmes offer Erasmus+ exchange opportunities, broadening your understanding of how technology is managed across different European business cultures.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that includes at least six subjects, including English and Mathematics at Ordinary or Higher level; Higher-level Mathematics is advantageous and may be required at some institutions. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Business, Accounting, Applied Mathematics and any science or computing subject. CAO points requirements are typically moderate to moderately high, reflecting the programme's popularity and its dual business-IT appeal. If you do not meet the CAO requirements directly, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Business, Computing or IT can provide a recognised progression route into the programme. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature student route, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for those who qualify on socioeconomic or disability grounds.

Career Prospects

Demand for professionals who can bridge technology and business is strong and growing in Ireland, driven by ongoing digital transformation across both the private and public sectors. Graduates generally find employment relatively quickly, with starting salaries typically in the range of €32,000–€42,000 depending on the role and sector. With a few years of experience, progression into senior business analyst, programme manager or digital strategy roles can bring salaries into the €55,000–€80,000 range. The broad skill set of this degree also offers flexibility to move between industries without being locked into a single technical specialism.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is reshaping many of the functions that technology managers oversee, from automating business processes and enhancing data analytics to supporting strategic decision-making through predictive tools. As a graduate in this field, you will be expected to understand how to evaluate, procure and govern AI-driven systems rather than build them yourself. Courses are increasingly incorporating AI literacy, machine learning concepts and responsible AI governance to ensure graduates can lead organisations through AI adoption confidently. Rather than replacing technology managers, AI is expanding the scope and complexity of the role, making strong analytical and change management skills more valuable than ever.
