Studying veterinary nursing at bachelor level gives you a thorough grounding in animal anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical nursing care for a wide range of species. You will learn how to assist veterinary surgeons during surgery, carry out diagnostic procedures such as radiography and laboratory analysis, and provide anaesthetic monitoring and post-operative care. Practical clinical placements in veterinary practices are a central part of the programme, typically running alongside academic modules throughout the three or four years of study. A typical week combines lectures and laboratory sessions on campus with scheduled placement hours in small-animal, equine, or mixed practices. Some programmes offer opportunities to gain experience in zoo or wildlife settings, broadening your clinical exposure beyond companion animals.

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and Mathematics. Biology is highly recommended and is often listed as a preferred subject; Chemistry or Agricultural Science can also strengthen your application. CAO points for veterinary nursing at UCD and ATU are generally moderate to high, reflecting strong demand for limited places. If you do not meet the points requirement directly, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Animal Care or Science can provide a progression route into the programme. Mature applicants over 23 may apply through the mature student pathway, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants.
Demand for registered veterinary nurses in Ireland has grown steadily in recent years, driven by increased pet ownership and expanding referral and specialist practice sectors. Graduates with VCI registration find employment relatively quickly, particularly in urban areas and within large veterinary group practices. Salaries for newly qualified veterinary nurses typically range from approximately €28,000 to €34,000 gross per year, with experienced or senior nurses earning €38,000 to €50,000 or more in specialist or managerial roles. Rural and equine practices can also offer competitive packages including accommodation allowances.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence veterinary diagnostics, with AI-assisted tools being used to interpret radiographs, ultrasound images, and pathology slides with greater speed and accuracy. As a veterinary nurse, you are unlikely to be replaced by AI, as hands-on patient care, anaesthetic monitoring, and client communication require human judgement and empathy. However, you will increasingly be expected to work alongside AI diagnostic platforms and electronic patient management systems. Keeping up to date with these technologies through continuing professional development will become an important part of your professional practice.
