Professional Golfer
Holywood golfer, career Grand Slam winner.
Rory McIlroy grew up in Holywood, County Down in Northern Ireland, where he attended Sullivan Upper School. He showed an extraordinary talent for golf from a very young age, picking up a club at just 18 months old. His father Gerry worked extra jobs, including bar work, to fund Rory's golf training and equipment. Rather than pursuing a traditional third-level route, Rory turned professional at 18, committing fully to the sport that had shaped his entire childhood.
Rory burst onto the world stage by winning the US Open in 2011 at just 21 years old, setting a record score in the process. He went on to win the PGA Championship, The Open Championship, and a second PGA Championship, becoming one of the most decorated golfers of his generation. The road wasn't without difficulty — he famously collapsed at the 2011 Masters after leading going into the final round, but he used that painful experience as fuel to come back stronger. In 2025, he completed the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters, becoming the first European ever to achieve that feat.
Rory's story shows that specialising early in something you love, even when it means taking an unconventional path, can lead to extraordinary places. More importantly, how you respond to a very public failure matters far more than the failure itself — setbacks are just part of the journey, not the end of it.
