Professional Golfer
Cavan golfer, first Irish winner on the LPGA Tour.
Leona Maguire grew up in Ballyconnell, County Cavan, where she and her twin sister Lisa took up golf from a very young age, introduced to the sport by their father at Slieve Russell Golf Club. She attended Duke University in the United States on a golf scholarship, which is a route many talented young Irish athletes take as an alternative to the traditional Leaving Cert and CAO pathway. At Duke, she excelled both academically and on the golf course, becoming one of the most decorated collegiate golfers in NCAA history.
Leona spent an extraordinary 135 weeks ranked number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, a record that stood as the longest ever at the time. She turned professional in 2018 and worked her way through the LPGA Tour qualifying process, facing the grind of early professional life before breaking through. In 2021 she became the first Irish woman ever to win on the LPGA Tour, and her stunning performance at the Solheim Cup that same year, where she won an unprecedented five points from five matches, announced her to the world stage.
Leona's story shows that quiet, consistent work over many years is what builds something extraordinary — her record-breaking amateur career was built long before anyone was watching. If you love something and are willing to keep going even when progress feels slow, the breakthrough will come on its own terms.
