Poet & President
President, poet and former sociology lecturer.
Michael D. Higgins grew up in County Clare and later Limerick, raised partly by relatives after a difficult childhood. He developed a love of literature, language and ideas from a young age. He went on to study at University College Galway and Indiana University in the United States, where he deepened his interest in sociology and politics. He later became a sociology lecturer himself, showing that education was always central to who he was.
Higgins entered politics through the Labour Party, spending years moving between the Dáil and Seanad before earning a lasting seat in Galway. He served as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht from 1993 to 1997, championing the Irish language and the creative sector at a time when culture was often overlooked in government. He was also twice Mayor of Galway. In 2011, after decades of public service, he was elected President of Ireland, proving that patience and persistence in public life can lead somewhere extraordinary.
Michael D. Higgins shows that you don't have to choose between the creative and the political — between poetry and power. If you care deeply about your community and keep showing up, even when progress is slow, you can shape the country you live in. Your voice, however quiet it feels now, is worth developing.
