Olympic Rower & Doctor
Skibbereen rower, Olympic champion and medical doctor.
Paul O'Donovan grew up in Skibbereen, County Cork, where his love of rowing began at the local Skibbereen Rowing Club as a young teenager. He went on to study medicine at University College Cork (UCC), balancing the enormous demands of a medical degree with an elite international sporting career. His journey shows that academic ambition and sporting excellence are not mutually exclusive — with the right focus, both are achievable.
Paul first came to widespread attention when he won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics alongside his brother Gary, announcing Irish rowing to the world. He went on to become a seven-time world champion and a double Olympic champion, setting a world best time in the lightweight double sculls at the Tokyo 2020 Games. All of this was achieved while he was progressing through his medical studies, qualifying as a doctor — a remarkable balancing act that required extraordinary discipline and time management.
Paul's story is a reminder that you do not have to choose between your passion and your ambition — with commitment, you can pursue both at the same time. If you feel pulled in more than one direction, that is not a weakness; it might be your greatest strength. Start where you are, work consistently, and do not wait for the perfect moment.
