Education

Brian Cody grew up in Callan, County Kilkenny, where his passion for hurling took root from a young age. He trained as a primary school teacher and went on to build a long career as a teacher and eventually principal of a national school in Kilkenny. Like many young Irish people of his generation, he balanced his studies with a deep commitment to his sport and his local club, James Stephens. His grounding in education and community shaped the disciplined, values-led approach he would later bring to management.

Career

Cody was a decorated player himself, winning three All-Ireland senior hurling medals with Kilkenny in the 1970s. When he stepped into management of the Kilkenny senior team in 1998, few could have predicted what would follow. Over 24 years he led Kilkenny to eleven All-Ireland titles, becoming the longest-serving and most successful manager in the county's history and widely regarded as the greatest hurling manager of all time. He retired from the role in 2022, leaving behind a legacy built not on shortcuts but on relentless standards and collective belief.

Key Lesson

Brian Cody's story shows that excellence is built quietly, through daily commitment to your craft and the people around you. He never chased fame — he focused on the work, the team, and the culture, and the results followed. Whatever you're passionate about, showing up with discipline and genuine care for others will take you further than talent alone ever could.
