Chef & Restaurateur
Farmhouse cook who earned Ireland its first Michelin star.
Myrtle Allen grew up in Cork and developed a deep love of food and farming from an early age, shaped by the rich agricultural landscape of Munster. She did not follow a conventional culinary school route — instead, her education came through hands-on experience, running a household and working closely with the land and its produce. This practical grounding taught her that the best cooking starts long before you ever reach a kitchen.
In the 1960s, Myrtle and her husband Ivan began welcoming guests to their family home, Ballymaloe House in Shanagarry, County Cork, turning it into a restaurant and hotel. Her cooking was rooted in local, seasonal Irish ingredients at a time when that was deeply unfashionable — and it paid off. In 1974, The Yeats Room at Ballymaloe earned Ireland its very first Michelin star, a landmark moment for Irish food culture. She went on to write cookbooks and teach, helping to inspire a whole generation of Irish chefs, including her daughter-in-law Darina Allen.
Myrtle Allen proves that you don't need to follow the most obvious path to reach the top of your field — curiosity, conviction and pride in where you come from can be just as powerful as any qualification. If you care deeply about something and stay true to it, the world will eventually take notice.
