Education

Feargal Quinn grew up in Ireland with a father who ran a grocery business, which gave him an early taste for retail from a young age. He studied at University College Dublin, where he developed the business knowledge that would later shape his career. His real education, though, happened on the shop floor itself, learning directly from customers and staff what it means to run a business well.

Career

Quinn founded Superquinn in 1960, building it into one of Ireland's most respected supermarket chains by doing something simple but powerful: he walked the shop floor every day and actually talked to his customers. This practice, which he called 'boomerang management', set Superquinn apart at a time when many business leaders stayed behind closed doors. He later served as an independent Senator for over two decades, bringing a straight-talking business perspective into Irish public life. His book on customer service became widely read by business leaders across the world.

Key Lesson

You don't need to have all the answers from the start — Quinn's biggest skill was listening, and that's something anyone can practise. Whether you end up in business, politics or anything else, paying genuine attention to the people around you is a superpower worth building now.
