President & Lawyer
Former President, lawyer and academic.
Mary McAleese grew up in Ardoyne, a tough area of north Belfast, where she attended St Dominic's Grammar School. She went on to study law at Queen's University Belfast, graduating in the early 1970s. Her time growing up during the Troubles gave her a deep understanding of division and injustice, and shaped her commitment to using the law as a tool for change. She later pursued further academic work and became a professor of criminal law, eventually holding a chair at Queen's University Belfast.
After qualifying as a barrister, McAleese worked in journalism and academia before entering public life. She stood for Fianna Fáil in a general election in 1987 but was unsuccessful, showing that setbacks were part of her story too. In 1997 she secured the Fianna Fáil presidential nomination and won the election, becoming Ireland's eighth president and the first from Ulster. She was so widely respected that she was returned unopposed for a second term in 2004, serving a remarkable fourteen years in office.
Mary McAleese's life shows that where you come from does not limit how far you can go — she grew up in one of Ireland's most divided communities and became its head of state. If you face obstacles, whether in your area, your background, or your own confidence, remember that persistence and a belief in fairness can take you to places nobody expects.
