Visual Artist
Artist who works with the sea, skin and bone.
Dorothy Cross grew up in Cork, where she developed a curiosity about the natural world and the objects around her from an early age. She went on to study art formally, training at Leicester Polytechnic in England and later at the San Francisco Art Institute in the United States. Pursuing art beyond Ireland took courage, but it gave her exposure to a wide range of materials, ideas and ways of thinking. Her education was broad and experimental, which shaped the fearless, cross-media approach she is known for today.
Cross began building her reputation through sculpture and installation work that explored themes many artists avoided — sexuality, memory, the body, and what lies beneath the surface of everyday life. Her breakthrough came when she was selected to represent Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1993, one of the most prestigious art events in the world. She went on to work with unexpected materials — shark skin, jellyfish, bones, the sea itself — creating work that unsettled and fascinated audiences in equal measure. By 2009, she was being described by the president of UCC as one of Ireland's leading artists.
You do not have to make safe or predictable choices to build a serious career. Dorothy Cross followed her own strange and genuine interests — the sea, the body, memory — and that honesty is exactly what made her work stand out. Whatever you are quietly obsessed with, it is worth taking seriously.
