Travel Writer
Waterford travel writer who cycled to India in 1963.
Dervla Murphy grew up in Cappoquin, County Waterford, where she developed a fierce love of cycling and reading from a young age. She largely educated herself at home, spending years caring for her ailing mother rather than pursuing formal third-level education. That time was not wasted — she devoured books and nurtured a deep curiosity about the wider world that no classroom could have contained.
In 1963, aged 31, Dervla set off alone on her bicycle from Ireland and cycled all the way to India — facing blizzards, wolves, and robbers along the road. She wrote about the journey in her debut book, 'Full Tilt', which was published to wide acclaim and launched a writing career that would span more than five decades. She never had a conventional career path or a publisher's advance to rely on at the start; she simply went, experienced, and wrote honestly about what she found.
Dervla's story shows that a non-traditional path — no degree, no clear plan — can still lead somewhere remarkable if you follow what genuinely drives you. If you have a passion, whether it's travel, writing, sport, or anything else, pursuing it seriously is an education in itself. You don't need to have everything figured out at eighteen.
