Exploring the Gardens and Parklands of Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle's sweeping parklands and restored gardens offer a richly rewarding day out in the heart of County Kilkenny.

Kilkenny Castle sits at the very centre of Kilkenny city, overlooking the River Nore, and its grounds are among the most accessible and rewarding garden spaces in the country. The castle itself dates back to the twelfth century and has been shaped by many hands over the centuries, but it is the restored Victorian-style formal garden and the broad, open parklands stretching behind it that draw visitors back again and again. Managed by the Office of Public Works, the site is kept in excellent condition year-round, and there is a genuine sense of scale and calm once you step away from the city streets and into the grounds.

The parklands are free to enter and open throughout the day, making them ideal for an unhurried walk, a family picnic, or simply sitting on the grass with a good view of the castle's east facade. The formal Rose Garden, enclosed within trimmed hedging, is particularly lovely when the roses are in bloom, and the long tree-lined path that runs through the lower parkland gives you a sense of the estate's original ambition. Children tend to love the open space, and the grounds are well-suited to anyone who wants gentle, flat terrain without a great deal of planning required.

To reach Kilkenny Castle from most parts of County Kilkenny, follow the signs into Kilkenny city centre — the castle is hard to miss, sitting prominently on the Parade. There is paid parking nearby on the Parade itself and in several car parks within a short walk. If you are coming by bus, several intercity routes from Dublin, Waterford, and Cork stop at Kilkenny, and the castle is easily walkable from the main bus stop in the city. The grounds are pram- and wheelchair-friendly along the main paths, though some of the more informal areas of the parkland can be uneven underfoot.

For the castle interior, admission is charged — expect to pay around eight to ten euro for adults, with reduced rates for children and families. The interior tour covers the state rooms, the long gallery with its impressive hammerbeam roof, and rotating art exhibitions. It is worth combining an interior visit with a walk in the grounds to make a full afternoon of it. Bring a light waterproof layer regardless of the forecast, as the parkland is open and exposed when the wind picks up off the river.

A local tip worth knowing: most visitors enter the parklands through the main castle gate on the Parade, but there is also a lower entrance near the river walk that connects to the broader linear park along the Nore. Coming in or out that way gives you a completely different perspective on the castle's scale and lets you extend the walk considerably without retracing your steps. The riverside path is particularly quiet on weekday mornings and offers a peaceful contrast to the busier castle courtyard. Kilkenny city itself has excellent cafes and independent shops within a few minutes' walk, so it is easy to round off the visit with lunch nearby.
